LVM Problems - HP UX 10.10 10.20 11.00

  • Follow

To LVM & HP UX Gurus

I'm not an Unix administrator so my questions may appear to be ridiculous
.... to some experts.

However, I do have a serious problem with 2 external disks.

The 2 disks were connected to a C160 HP UX 10.20. As the C160 fails on
memory problems and was very instable, I do have connected these 2 disks on
a C360 HP UX 11.00.

Using SAM, the disks were mounted automatically in VxFS, but I can't see any
data on them !

Back on the C160, one disk has been mounted. It is seen, but no data on it !

The second disk has not yet been mounted as I do not want to do the same
mistake.

The volume groups were removed on the C160 so any actions like : mkdir,
mknode, vgimport, vgchange, vgcgcbacup, ... fail as the needed information
(I suppose) has been removed

when removing the VG.

I'm afraid than this is now a very serious problem (and not obvious at all,
for me at least).

I do have a backup on 2 "old" disks that were mounted on a HP 735 HP UX
10.10 (probably not in LVM).

Can I recover the data from the 2 "new" disks (connected on the C160) ?

If not on the C360 under HP UX, with special software ?

Can I connect the disks on a PC with the hope to see the data and then to
ftp them back ?

How can I mounted the 2 (old) disks (from the HP 735) ?

Thanks a lot for any help. :+)

Best regards

Marc Delporte

To HP UX gurus

Thanks to Walt Howard for the first indications : old HFS disks are OK now
:+)

However, the problem I do have now is :

- how to "rebuild the file system" on the the LVM disks that have been
removed (without using vgexport) ?

- I'm able to mount the disk but I do not see any data on it (panic) !

Best regards

One disk (the old one from the 735) has been mounted (*) and is OK (all data
there) on the C360 :+).

(*) following your procedure with the old fstab from the 735.

The problem is NOW to retrieve (restore) informations on the second disk
(with no backup) on which

the LVM informations are probably lost.

Thanks a lot for your help. I do really appreciate :+)

Were they connected as part of a volume group, or individually?

Were they the root volume group or extra disks? It matters....

--> The 2 disks were mounted as extra disks i.e. on /dev/vg01 & /dev/vg02

--> The "root disk" (internal disk) is on /dev/vg00 and is OK.

What commands did you use on the C160 to logically disconnect them from

HP-UX before you unplugged them? Did SAM on the 360 mount them as if they

were new (unformatted) disks? If the disks were a volume group, then I

think you wanted to "vgexport" them on the C160, and then you could

"vginport" them on the C360.

--> I do have not used any commands to disconnect them from C160 before
unplugged.

--> I don't known exactly what SAM, and me :+( , have done. The operations
were :

Disk devices

Disks were seen are unused

Add --> Using logical volume manager

Create or extend a volume group

Volume group name vg01 OK

Add new logical volume

LV name lvol9, usage file system

LV size 17540, mount directory /local/home2

Add OK OK

Confirmation box with :

"if the disk is added, the old LVM structures will be overwritten and it
will not be possible

to recover the data currently on the disk"

do you want to continue and add this disk

YES

I'm afraid that I have mounted these disks on the C360 as new unformatted
disks.

I do understand now my error using SAM. I should have done vgexport from the
C160 and vgimport to the C360 !

New volume group devicefiles can be created (on either the C160 or the C360)

to have a place to logically attach the disks. Do that before you attach

them physically.

--> The problem then is when I've try to mounted again the disk on the C160,
I have used the same procedure.

As the volume group were existing, I have remove volume group vg01 & vg02
(using vgremove) in order to be able to mount them back.

So I do have probably crash the (old) LVM informations. Only one disk has
been mounted.

You may need these. I do not remember exactly when LVM became available

for workstations. The servers had it around 9.04.

--> The problem is that I do have only one of the 2 disk working, the second
one (very old) seems to be dead !

*************************************************

>Can I recover the data from the 2 "new" disks (connected on the C160) ?

That depends on whether you wrote anything on them since they were

disconnected from the C160. If not, you can recover.

--> I do not have write anything on them. But for sure, I do have probably
crash the LVM informations corresponding

to these disks. Is this information on the root disk i.e. vg00 or on the
disk itself.

I do hope but don't kwon how this could be recover.

I know of no PCs that understand the Unix filesystem.

>How can I mounted the 2 (old) disks (from the HP 735) ?

Look in /etc/fstab (it may be called /etc/checklist) on the 735. Make

similar entries in /etc/fstab on the C360 (you will want to change the

mount point in the filesystem, but keep the rest of the entry as is).

Assuming the disks on the 735 aren't HPIB instead of SCSI, that should

let you mount them and do your FTP. Or just leave them attached to the

735 and FTP from there.

--> The disks are SCSI. In the fstab, I do have :

/dev/dsk/c0t5d0 /home2 hfs rw,suid 0 1

/dev/dsk/c0t5d0 /home2 swap end,pri=1 0 0

So something more simple, i.e. no Volume Group no Logical Name no LVM

And not the same cXtXdX, as I do have on the C360

/dev/dsk/c0t6d0 root internal

/dev/dsk/c1t6d0 vg01 external scsi 6

/dev/dsk/c1t5d0 vg01 external scsi 5

/dev/dsk/c1t4d0 vg01 external scsi 4

I will try to connect the old disk than is OK.

The remaning problem will be the second disk (new) ie to be able to read it
on the C360.

Well, this one way to get familiar with LVM.

It seems you did remove the disk without an vgexport and after connecting
them to the other system you did a create new vg with sam. You could try to
connect them to the old system again and try a vgcfgrestore. This should
write the partition information stored in /etc/lvm back to the disk and if
nothing else with the disk has happend it should be ok. If you have created
an new file system this won't work anymore.

good luck, Paul

To all

It seems that Orbit Software UK has a a PC software solution Final Data Unix
to recover the data on Unix systems (with the LAN).

Does any body has experienced that solution ?

Does it works for HP UX ?

I'm very curious about that!

Best regards

Marc

No need to learn DOS.
Final Data is the first recovery software operating perfectly on Windows.
Besides, Final Data uses an interface similar to a Windows search, so it is
simple to use.

No FAT backup file required.
Final Data doesn't have to be installed in advance as a backup program would
(backup method). Only Final Data can recover even after you lost your data.
Automated I-node/FAT Double Backup function also available for enhanced
recovery, but not essential.

It takes only 4 easy steps to recover.
It's very simple to use.
(1) Execute Final Data (2) Open drive (3) Search drive (4) Save it

It can also recover damaged directory information.
It can also recover data when directory entry information initialized (over
Enterprise Edition).

It can search recoverable files.
It is possible to search recoverable files using Wild Cards making it much
easier to identify the file you want to recover byinputting *.doc or data?
(over Enterprise Edition).

It can recover data using TCP/IP protocol through network.
Final Data Linux/Unix Edition has LinuxSlave/UnixSlave executing Linux/Unix
.. It is able to
recover data by searching Linux/Unix System running LinuxSlave/UnixSlave on
Final Data
computer (Windows95/98/NT/2000) after running LinuxSlave/UnixSlave on
Linux/Unix.

Main Function
* Recover deleted files/directories.
* Also recover data when Super Block or Inode List is damaged.
* Possible to recover data after deleted logical partition.
* Support over 8.4 GB hard disk.
* Recover all directories and their files/sub directories.
* Recover quickly with finding specific deleted files.
* Remote control data recover through network, Internet.
* Decoding function of professional user's recovered result report.
* Support 2 bytes of oriental characters.
* Support UNIX file system (EXT2, UFS etc.) -recover data each file system
format.
* Automatic Saving function of file system by Backup scheduling (cron
demon).
* Possible to recover deleted log file data by hacker.
* Possible to recover unbootable hard disk data.
* Possible to recover unbootable hard disk data in other normal PC with
Slave.
* Decoding function of searched and recovered objects’ report.
* Possible to recover long file name.
* Possible to recover original long file name used by information of backup
file system.
