File Transfer HP-48G & HP-49G

  • Follow

The HP-48G & 49G transfer files from the PC to the calculator thru 9
pin serial port cables & connectors. On the new PC's, there is no 9 pin
serial ports. How can files be transferred? Is there a way to adapt a
USB 2.0 port to a 9 pin serial port configuration for use with these
older calculators??

There exist various USB-to-RS232 adapters.
Some time ago, someone sold a customized
USB-to-HP48 adapter on eBay,
which could be used in combination
with the HP connectivity software.

I have this adapter, but never tried it because
I didn't want to install the HP connectivity software,
as I want to keep my system clean from so far
unnecessary software.

An interesting question in connection with using
USB -> Serial adapters for HP49G:

My HP49G has the celebrated "serial port bug" --
a very seriously mis-wired serial interface circuit,
present on all early 49G units, which not only
could short out the 49G if anything were poked
into the serial port pins, but also won't talk at all
to some *real* serial ports on real PCs,
depending on how sensitive those are to the
out-of-spec RS-232 interfaces of the bad 49Gs.

So, has anyone any news on whether those 49Gs
will or won't talk thru various USB -> Serial adapters?

Oh well, I can always just keep using my emulator,
although even my emulator's keyboard and mouse
(the original accessories for my HP-branded Celeron PC,
that is) are rapidly deteriorating,
just like modern HP calculator keyboards, screens, etc.

I use an HP C1405B keyboard with my main PC.

*That* was one of the last real HP quality keyboards,
although the electronics inside were made by KeyTronics,
but obviously according to HP specs,
when the word 'quality' had a meaning;-)

My mobile PC is a ThinkPad,
as the OmniBooks which followed the OB 800CT
also suffered from low quality and IMHO cheap design.

I have both a 49G with the serial port bug and one without it. In
actual practice, I can't tell any difference between them in
communications to either the built-in RS-232 port on my PC or the
USB/RS-232 adapter.
