Before the HP49/50 series was even a twinkling in anyone's eye,
there were these people in France who wrote things for the
original HP48 series called "Erable" (algebra)
and "MetaKernel" (everything else).

HP hired those guys to produce the HP49G, Etc.,
and now the same stuff is called the CAS and the OS :)

I like the term, "Erable" better than the term, "Algebra." For when I
take pen in hand, it is likely that I will be more err-able than
successful when doing algebra!

You might want to buy a new 50g. I did and I don't regret the
pruchase at all. It's a nice machine and with your experience with
the 48g, the learning curve probably won't be a problem.

Trade it for a 48G+ ? [32K on 48G may not be quite enough, alas]

On the other hand, when you *emulate* the 48G
(perhaps on your cell phone),
you can easily expand it to a 48GX (up to 4MB),
but then you could go all the way, to emulate a 50G,
so one probably would skip Erable
and go directly to CAS (avoiding Boardwalk along the way :)

Most sorry, probably need much more memory,
or trade up, or keep old treasure and just get new one.

For J.Chen:

If you're going to part with your 48G to get a new "algebra" calc,
there seems to be someone in another thread shopping around
for a 48G, just to run INPRT to receive programs from a 42S
(INPRT is fortunately under 1K itself, so no problem on 48G).

Is this a deal made in sub-space heaven, or what?

I don't know. Erable comes in various flavors,
with docs (and other people's add-ons);
see which work with/without RAM card(s),
or say what you have, so that others
can then give you specific advice:

http://www.hpcalc.org/search.php?query=3Derable

Algebra isn't what I do with calcs
(and I also started with only a 48G),
so I never tried it ;-)

Erable runs on the HP 48GX without additional memory cards. I recommend
using Erable 3.2 (the last version) from this link:

http://www-fourier.ujf-grenoble.fr/~parisse/english.html

You can take everything from there, also the documentation. You might need
to tinker a bit to get everything working, but is definitely worth it.

Good luck and best regards

Chris
