i have windows xp pro on a domain and for some reason every time i try
to link my 48G+ to my serial port the "HP Explorer" or "PC Connectivity
Kit" report that:
[Error Opening Port "COM1": Access is denied]
or
[The COM port could not be opened.]
respectively
any suggestions?

My guess is that some other application has laid claim to COM1, or
at least Windows thinks that's the case. Maybe check which other
processes are running, and see if one of them could conceivably
want to use COM1. Or maybe something that was using COM1 didn't
get the message through to Windows that it didn't need it anymore.

I suppose that XP has Device Manager or equivalent? Check it and
see what it has to say about the COM ports.
But strangely enough, HyperTerminal allows me to configure COM1
for 1.5 stop bits, but if I do that, then it gives me an "Unable
to open COM1. Please check your port settings."" message when I
try to connect. Who knows?
Do have have other applications that you could try to use with
COM1?

First guess is that you don't have administrator rights, and that access to
COM1 has been restricted?

Would a firewall possibly block COM1? I know that doesn't seem to
make a lot of sense, but there seems to be a lot of things that
don't make a lot of sense where Microsoft products are involved.
Could it be something to do with SP2 for XP?

One more: Maybe you have PC-2-PC
"direct cable modem"
attached to the COM1
Check your modems and device manager

Hey thanks for all the help guys.
I'm on an ADSL network here @ work.. we got everything running through a
16 port switch (so thats not tieing up my com1).
also i don't have any application running that use the port. (typical
setup: taskmanager, msn, nis2k5, thunderbird, sunbird, autocad 2004,
SETI, WCG agent.)
i do have sp2 installed, however i've disabled the firewall and am
relying on the router and nis2k5.
i will look for a setting in nis about com ports.
anyone have issues using com ports in windows xp?
thanks again everyone!!!

Possibilities:
- You do not connect your Calculator on the correct COM HP connect is check
(play with Auto, COM 1 or COM 2),
- Speed of HP Connect should be maximum 9600,
- You do not Download Xserv in your HP 48G+ (see in HP Connect => File /
Download HP 48 ....),
- HP Connect as no access to the outside due to your Fire Wall,
- You have been choosing on your calculator transfer by IrDA while Wire
should be selected,
- The data transfert mode is not the same ASCII on your calculator and
Binary mode on your calculator (or the opposite) => Should be the same (see
in HP Connect => File/ Binary Transfer Mode)
- The internal mode of your calculator had been changed you should do a hot
Reset (Maintain in the same time ON and C keys). If nothing change, try Hard
Reset (with a metallic part to switch the Hard Reset => Then try a complete
Reset of the calculator (Keys ON + A + F)
You should find normally solve your issue with this comment
Good luck

I'm not familiar with "HP Explorer".
For the 48G series, the Conn4x instructions say to store the XSrvr
library in port 0 or 1. If I recall correctly, Conn4x can do very
nasty things if you store XSrvr in port 2 or higher.
The Conn4x instructions don't mention this, but after storing a
library in a port, you should purge it from wherever you
originally downloaded it to. At least in earlier models, a library
im memory can interfere with the memory recovery routine when you
respond YES to the "Try To Recover Memory?" prompt.
Of course, for the 49 series, the simplest way is to use the filer
to move it to a port instead of copying it to a port.
