as400 cannot ping PC

I have a simple network setup:  one as400 at v5r1, a w2k PC and a
linksys router that connects everyone to the internet.

Everything is working, but I cannot ping the pc from the as400.

I can client access from the PC to the as400 and the as400 tells me
its ip address is 192.168.1.8.   Which matches of course with what
ipconfig displays on the PC.

The as400 is 192.168.1.160.  I can ping it from the pc.

The as400 can ping the linksys router.  Its ip addr is 192.168.1.1.

There is no firewall running on the PC, the router or the as400.  Why
would the as400 not be able to ping the pc?

What is the route defined on your 400 setup??

You cannot ping 192.168.1.8??  Are you using this IP for something
else on your network by chance.

I could be wrong but I didn't think Win2000 by default would respond
to a ping request.  Doesn't IP services have to be running on the
machine in order for that to happen?

192.168.1.1 is my linksys router.  the 400 is 192.168.1.160 and my pc
is 192.168.1.8.  The PC can ping the 400, but the 400 cannot ping the
PC.

The reason I want to use ping is because RUNRMTCMD does not connect to
the pc either. I started the client access remote command service and
I think opened up the security to accept *none as the user name.

Can you ping the PC from any other PC? Perhaps it's set not to answer
to ping. As I remember Win2000 without some network services selected
at install does not.

command netstat on the AS/400.
Menu 2: Is there only a DFTROUTE to the router or anything else?
Menu 1: Do you have a proper subnet mask like 192.168.0.0 or
192.168.1.0? The router would be found by DFTROUTE even if there is
something wrong here.

Can you ping the AS/400 from the AS/400?

Try adding a routing entry like this.  I suspect the AS400 is
directing traffic to the router, and the router isn't smart enough to
redirect internally.

ok, since I started this ...

I have a home office setup.  In one room is a PC, the 400 and a dlink
mini hub.  In the other room is a PC, a linksys router, a dsl modem
and another dlink mini hub.  The equipment in each room is networked
to the mini hubs and then the two hubs are up linked ( there is a
switch on the bottom of the hub ) to each other.

room1:
linksys router: 192.168.1.1
w2k pc#1:  192.168.1.3

room2:
w2k pc#2:  192.168.1.8
as400: 192.168.1.160

there is a zone alarm firewall on pc#1.  it has been turned off.  no
firewall on the other equipment.

I just fired everyone up and start pinging:
  the 400 can ping out of the network to the internet 
  the 400 can ping itself
  the 400 can ping the router
  the 400 cannot ping pc#1 or pc#2
  pc#2 can ping the as400, the router and the internet
  pc#2 cannot ping pc#1 ????
  pc#1 can ping everything ( Pc#2, as400, router, the internet )

I could blame the problem on the 400 because it cannot ping either PC.
 But I cant explain why one PC can ping the other, but not the other
way around!

The only reason I am doing this is because I cannot get RUNRMTCMD to
work from 400 to PC.  So whatever, thanks for the help.

When you try to ping the PCs, are you using the IP address or the PC's name
from the Host Table?

What is the subnet mask on the AS400's interface?

Who cares... If he's using a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 or 255.255.0.0 
it doesn't need to use the gateway

Thanks Terrence and others.  I added the router to 192.168.1.8 but the
ping still does not happen.  I even re-ipled the as400.  I do have a
cisco soho router I can use.  I just have not had the need to connect
it since the linksys sr41 was working well.

I assume that between room1 and room2 are just cables, no routers or hubs.
Am I correct?
If you are using hubs, make sure that the AS400 & PC2 are not in the uplink
connection on the hub. Also make sure that the hubs are not connected from
uplink to uplink.


On the linksys, check the Dymanic Routing tab. Do you have the mode as
Gateway?  In the Static Routing Tab, are the entries set to :

Printing on AS400 via IBM AS400 Java Toolkit
Hello all, I'm working on a program that needs to send a print job to a printer connected to an AS/400. I've tried using the SpooledFileOutputStream and I've also tried using one of the SCS Writer classes. Neither solution is working. With the SpooledFileOutputStream I am at least able to create my print file, but when my program ends, the file is still not being printed. This program does not run on the AS400, it runs on a PC and connects to the AS400 via the toolkit classes. I know this part works as I am able to use the toolkit to access Data Queues, Files and Data Areas without a problem. Is there anyplace anyone can point me to see some examples of how to print a file using the AS400 Java Toolkit? ibm as400 scsi drives in PC ? -newbie question-
i have aquired 5 ibm scsi drives and cages pulled from a retired AS400 server. i was hoping i could use them in a raid configuration connected to a generic PC with an adaptec 2940u2w . they are all recognized but throw up errors when writing to drive ( ie. formatting) are these compatable with regular PC scsi ? is it the drive microcode ? am i out of luck on these drives ? drive cage = type 6713 ibm FRU = 59H6611 drive model number = DGHS-09U date code 01APR99 (all 5 same date) The low leve format of the drives is different (520 vs. 512 for PCs as I recall) You should be able to find a utility to reformat them. Hi All, We have two AS400's at different locations, and were able to passthrough and send files between both no problems. Last week one of our AS400's was moved to another location, with an IP change. We have updated the IP addresses on the other AS400 and can passthrough fine....however we can no longer send files from the new location. When I look at the distribution queue I see the following status: RTY-FAIL Any idea's as to what may be causing this? Hi I need to place a trigger on a set of tables on an AS400 to fire off whenever new records are added to these tables. This trigger program will then transfer the data to another AS400 across a WAN. This will allow us to transfer orders from one system to another. Can anyone tell me how I would achieve this. Normally if it had been a PC I would have used an ODBC type application but I am not sure what is available to me for AS400 to AS400 data transfer. I know that we can transfer a SAVF by FTP but this is not a route I would like to go down. I would prefer to populate tables directly if possible. Problems with pinging an as400
When i ping my production as400 using the ip address i get instantly a response. When i ping it with a name , it takes up to 1 min before the ip address is found. The hostname is in the host table with the correct ip address. I tought that when pinging using a hostname the as400 will immed look into this table to get the ip address. Am i overlooking something ? However, if you're pinging from some other machine, e.g. your PC, then the DNS in your network may be having a problem. Hi Look at the CFGTCP option 12. Is the right DNS server ip adres configured. And also look at the DNS lookup parameter (*local/remote). PC FTP to AS400
My VB .net application used to work now it doesn't, nothing has changed with the application. I FTP long file names (or used to) to our AS400 but since last Wednesday I get this "Specified object name too long, limit is 10 characters: LINE20050219." message. The filename I was sending was LINE20050219_000000.txt so I'm not sure why LINE20050219. is in the error message. The commands being executed are as follows: open xx.xx.x.xxx userid pswd cd /home/celeb STOR line20050219_000000.txt I am (and have been) using an FTP .DLL that has an uploadfile procedure and the only parameter to pass is file name. The .dll issues the raw FTP commands hence the STOR command vs a put. Hi all, I've the following issue: - I have to move data from a AS400 with CCSID 65535 (no conversion) to another AS400 with CCSID 37 I'm using DDM files on the second AS400 linked to the first AS400, but reading DDM files I have the problem that data are different in the special characters... Looking for an explanation or documentation on the as400 specific extensions to the PowerPC instruction set. Pointers on the as400 are stored as 16 byte values. The LQ ( load quad word ) and STQ ( store quad word ) instructions are used to load and store those pointers. Here is PPC assembler code that loads a pointer from an EA into a register: LQ 24, 0x1e50(30), 6 SELRI 26, 25, 0, 41 LQ loads the 16 bytes stored at EA reg30 + 0x1e50 into reg24 and reg25. Yes you read that right, has anyone tried this before? I have a 2741 disk controller that I've put in a Win98 PC. The system sees it as a SCSI Bus Controller (which it is) but can't find drivers for it. Has anyone tried this before and have see it working? Just being curious. I haven't tried this in a newer OS like XP yet. It may work fine there. BTW, I also have a 2838 network card in a PC and it works find. Windows found it as an AMD 10/100 card. I guess PCI is PCI weather it's PC or AS400. two PC to AS400 ODBC problems
I have two problems with C# code that uses ODBC to call a stored procedure = on the IBM i.=20 The first is the connection to the 400. I have to supply a user name and pa= ssword in the ODBC connection string. Which I know is not required in that = if the user name and password are omitted client access will prompt on the = initial connection for entry of the user name and password. I am getting an= error "invalid password" when the code opens the OdbcConnection. The 2nd problem is calling a stored procedure that defines a decimal(9,2) p= arameter as output. I am getting the decimal value to return, but the decim= al precision is being clipped. 131.21 returns to the caller as 131. The code is below. FTP Error when connecting to AS400 from PC
I am in the process of configuring a Model 170. I have a direct serial connection between the PC and the 400. In addition, I have networked the PC and 400 on an ethernet line. I am able to use the Client Access file transfer utility to send and receive files from the 400. But when I attempt to ftp files from the PC, I receive the following messages. FTP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (my FTP Address) connected to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx connection closed by remote host Do you have any ideas on what this could be? AS400 printing to PC-connected printer
I have an Epson LX-300+ connected to a PC. I've set up a printer session using client access. The AS400 seems to ignore any of the driver, font or page settings in Windows or on the hardware. I checked "Transform print data" and chose a comparable printer, and that allows me to print in a legible font. But no martter what paper size I choose, whether it be in the hardware setting, the printer setup in Windows or in the "transform print data" selection, it seems to ignore paper size setting. This results in only the first line being lined up, and each line after is about 1.5 times further down than it should. When the job finishes, the printer form feeds about 2.5 more pages. The page I'm using is 8" long, which I set on the hardware and in the Windows printer setup. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
