Last year, in 2006 I did exactly the same with very interesting
results which you can check following this link at google:
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action/browse_frm/thread/49b3f6e04af53f9a/
This year, in 2007 I decided do the same to see what new games
have been released since then that we can add, even some older
titles that where not talked about a year ago.
In a way its to see how in one year we evolved in PC Games, was
there a regression and less new titles have no need for disk to
be inserted when playing? or was there a improvement and there
are more titles with no need for disk inserted when playing?
So lets check it out... here we go...
I'm looking for Retail PC Games sold in CD-ROM or DVD-ROM
of any kind/type/genre with:
.. No Copy-Protection
.. No CD check
.. No need for CD or DVD disk to be inserted when playing
.. No Product Activation
.. No service based systems like STEAM
Preferably not very old games cause the older the games the
more difficult to find them still being sold in the market.
And btw the requirements can either be in PC Games that have
it from start right out of the box or with official patches
released later by the publisher or the developer that remove
the copy-protection and CD check.
Please no cracks or drive emulators but only the game itself
featuring the no need for CD/DVD to run.
Also very important no copy-protection replacements like with
STEAM or Product Activation, meaning its really no need for
disk to be inserted when playing without anything in exchange
And always Retail, no online delivery download versions.
At the end and just like I did last year I will compile all
the contributions in a single list and post it right here.
Thanks
PS: I know this info can end up in the hands of pirates and
obviously its damaging but I think it is more important it
being available to all so honest PC Gamers can have a chance
to support games with no copy protection. If even so you do
not trust to publicly disclose this information feel free to
email me directly to pcgamer23708@yahoo.com

Oh, dear!
Must be off your meds again..... ?
I have several hundred single-player games with CD-check ( all
purchased by me ). Just stick the CD(or DVD) in and go. Not a single
one had ever failed a disk-read. Or if I feel really, really lazy, I
might download a CD-crack from Gamecopyworld.
Don't you have anything better to do with your life than repeatedly
post your long diatribes on this subject of truly-marginal interest to
the above newsgroups?
Why not start up a new newsgroup called :-
"comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.unprotected"
and take your postings on this subject there??
Please!! Please!! Please!!

I think this sort of post is the most responsible thing you can do to promote
your ideas. Once every 3-4 months, just to let people know that there is an
alternative to DRM and online activation.
Good job.

Read the post header and content more carefully. She includes any
games that have the simple CD/DVD check. She wants zero
copy-protection of any sort, including recognition of the game-disk.
Since at least 95% of single-player PC games have a pc-harmless
CD-check ( not Starforce, nor the true-DRM of Bioshock. nor Steam
activation), her list of 'unprotected' games is effectively
meaningless. All except a very few on her list also happen to be
third-grade titles with no compelling reason to buy them. However, you
will find that in follow-up postings, the OP will endeavor to convince
you that one or more of these games are the best thing since
sliced-bread --- just because they have no copy-protection.... She is
tilting at one of her favorite nutty windmills. One of her periodic
pointless attention-craving mechanisms.

Not so - each and every game I listed is fully 100% unprotected by the
OP's definition

Wargamers would argue about that :)
I realize the OP is cross-posting this to hell and back, but since he
included the war-historical ng - from which I'm typing this - I grab
the opportunity to make some pr for a game-category in which user-
hostile copy protection is not rampant. And we like to keep it that
way :)

Eddy,
Thanks for the useful info, but I would be very careful about feeding
this particular troll. She is not a strategic-game player at all.
Generation of these pointless lists is purely an attention-getting
maneuver. She apparently lives in the hinterland of Portugal on a
dial-up connection and has been haunting the Action and RPG newsgroups
for abour 2 years.
For your bandwidth and sanity sake, hopefully her posting to your
newsgroup is an aberration. Normally, she dings the Action and RPG
group. Her postings are very lengthy and she has a limited number of
windmills that she repeatedly tilts at. This is one of them and
previously she obviously has left the strategic group off the list.
She normally treats the readers as morons if they post replies not
agreeing with her point of view. Reply-postings with lots of capital
letters and exclamation-points. Best not to reply at all.

Oh God. I don't agree with her. I just think this is the best way to promote
her austere set of values, as opposed to ranting at us every other day.
The best way to promote an opinion that's out there is to promote buying what's
out there that matches the opinion. Plus: not brag about it, nor post photos,
fan mail, hate mail, or call everyone a slave. ;^)

It's been ages since we had a troll over at war-historical. My theory
as to the why of this is because the regulars are too scary :)
When a baby-troll makes an appearance, we don't kill it straight away,
but carefully nurture and feed it in order to make it more of a
challenge later on - ain't that what you RPG guys do as well ? :)

Nope - they were always part of the x-posts - seen plenty of posts by
the OP before, but thought the double opportunity (shut the OP up and
make some pr for wargaming) was too good to miss.

First Eddy, thanks for sharing this info
Second its again evident to take the conclusion after reading your
post that copy-protection used in PC Games changes with the genre.
I've been defending this for some time... copy-protection is a direct
reflection of the type of games, and that is cause of the fan base.
The more irresponsible dishonest and juvenile the fan base is, the
more likely you will have aggressive copy-protection systems.
The more mature, responsible and honest the fan base the more likely
you will have more friendly copy-protection systems.
Its no coincidence you giving us so many Wargames that don't have copy-
protection.
My genre is Action and even with many Action games being released, I
simply can't give you the same number of games with no using copy-
protection cause aggressive copy-protection is what dominates Action
PC Games precisely due to the fan base it has.
A fan base irresponsible, immature, juvenile, but adults in age that
are simply dishonest and cowards.
I will not change genres and game preferences due to copy-protection,
although I would like to, nevertheless I feel totally out of place
among many Action fans that are simple common thieves that will always
take a opportunity to steal if they can get away with it.
Let me give you a classic example, two action games released this year
with a couple of months apart.
One released 3 months ago didn't use any copy-protection which btw is
extremely rare and shocked almost everyone including myself, I'm
talking about STALKER, and the other Bioshock released a couple of
weeks ago while using the most aggressive form of copy-protection,
Product Activation with DRM tied to the hardware with strict limits in
the number of installs allowed.
So now with the low quality fan base Action PC Games has try to guess
what happened?
Obviously the coward scum pirates that populate the action fan base
community didn't waste any time STEALING STALKER and bragging about it
in the Usenet, and now with Bioshock those same that stole STALKER a
game with no copy-protection here the first to buy Bioshock full
price, why? cause they didn't find a way to easily steal it.
Its sad, very sad living among such low quality fans.
And specially with this kind of scum it will be very difficult to make
things better.
So again I feel my place would be among you Wargame fans and not the
scum Action fans.
As for the games themselves... well if the number of games you showed
us not using copy-protection is very good, the way they are sold is
not.
>From all the games you gave me and I checked I could only find one
that has a Retail version
So only one title really fits what I asked for.
And even that title is not widely available, I'm talking about "Making
History: The Calm And The Storm"
Amazon US sells "Making History: The Calm And The Storm" and has it in
stock but unfortunately it can only ship to the US which is stupid
cause there is no European Retail edition
http://www.amazon.com/Strategy-First-627006903694-Making-History/dp/B000KMCF6K/
As for all the rest, its all self-published with no Retail
distribution and mostly also online delivery
For example, Matrix, it seems they rely only on self-published
channel, their own distribution channel based only online so it
doesn't need the Retail channel, the good part is they give the
customer choice to how to get the game, either online distribution or
on physical format which I find correct.
HPS seems much more "amateur" but also it seems to rely on self
publishing and online.
Basically its these two that dominated the list you gave us.
So at the end I don't have that much to work with but nevertheless
thanks for sharing this with us.
For some conclusions...
Copy-protection in PC Games is directly linked to genre which is a
consequence of fan base quality
The more quality the fan base has the less copy-protection is used.
The formula is like
More fan base quality -> Less copy-protection in games
Less fan base quality -> More copy-protection in games
Wargames -> Mature honest fan base -> Less copy-protection in games
Action games -> dishonest fan base -> More copy-protection in games
Second conclusion which is also expected, PC Games becoming a niche
market means publishers have to rely more and more on their own
distribution channels and do more and more self-publishing and base
operation in the online web, cause Retail is neglecting the niche
markets.
Btw this is also starting to happen with Action games, yes and the
reason is very simple. Since Microshit launched they crap console
their has been a massive exodus by Action fans from the PC to that
crap console which is not surprising cause again the Action fan base
is a weak one with almost no personality and easily influenced by the
media and advertisement so they just act like a bunch of sheep
following their master; and with this "exodus" it left the PC Action
fan base much more reduced in number so it means Action PC Games are
selling much less and so releases are becoming less and less and
Retailers that want to sell Action PC Games are also less. So at the
end what happens with Wargames will eventually also happen to Action
PC Games although probably they will not have the strength Wargames
have and will simple slowly die...
Now would it be possible for you to keep in touch and everytime a
Wargame has a Retail edition you share this.
Yes I know its not common a Wargame having a wide Retail edition, but
I would bet at least a couple of titles, the top Wargame titles do
have a wider Retail edition and if any of those don't use copy-
protection I would certainly like to know and even if I have the means
end up buying the game.
Last year, with the last years list I ended up buying a Wargame,
Dangerous Waters so this year I would like to do the same at least
once.
Thanks

All of the titles that Eddy gave conform to the English definition of
"Retail". As I patiently tried to explain to you last year, the definition
of "Retail" is simply "The sale of goods or commodities in small quantities
to the consumer." My reference is the American Heritage Dictionary, though
any other English dictionary will give you about the same definition. The
definition does not include "stores favored by PC Games". Neither does it
include "widely available".
You can't just make up your own word definitions if you want to be taken
seriously. If "Retail" is not the word that actually fits what you are
trying to communicate then use more words and the correct definitions.
Jeez ... you must have the social skills of a mosquito. You might try to
resist the urge to piss on the few people who are still willing to talk to
you.

Actually, we release games to retail every year. Our releases that
went to actual retail stores:
UFO: Extraterrestrial (we're the North American Online Distributor for
this title)
Panzer Command: Operation Winterstorm
Starshatter: The Gathering Storm
Lock 'n Load: Band of Heroes
Gary Grigsby's World At War
Highway to the Reich
Korsun Pocket
Massive Assault
Uncommon Valor
Starships Unlimited: Divided Galaxies
Titans of Steel: Warring Suns
We did use pretty standard copy protection on the older releases from
2002/2003, but for the newer ones, we used only the serial number
registration system.

- Erik

I think that comment, followed by that sigquote, should be the new definition
of the word "irony" in all future English dictionaries.
