A new patch that updates the stats of a lot of platforms and fixes some
bugs.

Lucky me: I'm about to finally start a game at "Ironman" and I saw it.

A naval warfare game where the bugs get fixed - what a novel
concept :)

Not if you got Supremacy at Sea ...

Well, they *do* patch it, though.

However, SAS is a peculiar beast. Yes, the release was buggy, but many bugs
were fixed rather quickly. It is a classic example of a game "I would like
to like", but I don't. My frustration comes from the fact that I cannot put
my finger on what doesn't works in the game system/concept.

However, I can point at least on one mistake they did. The situation in the
Med in 1940 was really interesting, and some recent books shed even more
light on Italian "mistakes" and even things done right (for example, the
Regia Marina was correct in assuming that Italy didn't need aircraft
carriers since the peninsula was a "natural carrier". However, by badly
failing to coordinate the Navy with the Air Force they wasted this strenght.
As an Italian historian put it, "It was like if American carrier commanders
had to phone Pearl Harbor before launching a strike, and wait for the guys
there to go over the maps and greenlight it).

I would really like to test the Med scenario in SAS given this new wave of
in-depth research published in the 2000s. However, SAS provides a fantasy
scenario set in 1941 with Italy deploying *three* aircraft carriers. A very
bad design decision IMHO.

Wow, a patch that actually solves more problems than it creates. What
a novel concept. Guess it explains why I am playing the heck out of
_this_ naval wargame as opposed to ANW. :-)

Hear hear! The QA team of WitP: AE is already hiring lawyers :^D

If I just had a single word to describe this game it would be that -
frustration. It's pretty hard to point to a single development choice
and call it the culprit which wrecked the game, it's just that overall
the game does not reward you with fun - there's no fun in playing it.

I don't really feel justified in slamming it as it's not like the game
is broken or so but it sure cured me of ever wanting to play a sandbox
game again.

Got any titles ? My Amazon wish-list can handle all I throw at it :)

Incidentally : I know what I'll be getting as presents this X-Mas :
books and games. This because I've trained my relatives to go look at
my Amazon wish-list and my BGG want-list. Which books and games is a
surprise as there's lots to choose from so it's a win-win for
everyone. Note that this doesn't include pc wargames simply because no
publisher has yet bothered to have a wishing list or a voucher system
implemented at their website - their loss.

Alas, I see that the very best one is in Italian only. Strange, because the
author (Giorgo Giorgerini) contributes to a lot of foreign publications, and
is the lead compiler of the Italian "Janes" equivalent on modern warships.

My Christmas list revolves around books and - in the fun department -
Dungeons & Dragons supplements (Third Edition, of course :o) . No PC games
at all.

This patch (#5) hotfixed three pretty major holes, such as land radar
being overwritten by observers even when the unit had upgraded to
radar, 2E attack bombers strafing/bombing logic, and a barge refuel
crash bug. The DB changes went on for multiple pages. The game's
design requires a restart to get full advantage of the dynamic DB
changes, so the devs separated it into its own patch. The three
executable changes work for on-going games, as do the non-dynamic DB
changes.

All of the DB/OOB changes were also coded into the library of official
scenarios, which also received some AI tweaks to their scripts. In
addition, the patch included previously available, but harder to find,
new scenarios for the Marianas, Operation Downfall, and some others. A
new Burma scenario is under development by the chief AI coder and
India/Burma OOB master, Andy Mac.

Patch #6, worked on in parallel with the above, is due very soon. The
head coder for it reports it has 90+ changes and fixes, including a
major re-working of search patrol arcs. These will all be executable
changes, and will apply to on-going games.

I realize this game is not everyone's cup of tea, but the support for
it is magnificent. It's in the Matrix holiday sale (I haven't looked
at the particulars) if anyone was looking for an excuse to give it a
go. The forum is the most active in the Matrix library, and a very
friendly place to hang out.

I went to GOG and gifted myself with PC Neverwinter Nights (Bioware)
reported to be the best implementation of D&D - 3rd edition rules.
Another old game that's been mentioned in here.

It's fun.

Glad you like it, but the original campaign is rather bland (if you got the
whole package, the second and the third campaigns are a lot better). Go to
NeverwinterVault and look for the best modules made by the players (they are
all rated): some of them are fantastic (like, in a way, it happens with
TOAW III)

So, you would suggest to wait for this one before starting my game at "the
big one"?

Yes, I'm following the playtest on the forum.

I'm very happy about these new small/medium scenarios. Finally WitP: AE
fulfills his promise - both grand campaigns and snapshots of the war. Thank
you for your efforts!

Yep, got the whole package. The second and third modules are included.

Frankly, with the other gaming and graphics work I do, it's going to
take quite a while to finish. Plus, there's a Canadian feller
challenging me to a PBEM of WWII:ToW.

Busy, busy,busy (g)

For every action, there is an equal and opposite malfunction.
