The XT 286 was produced after the AT was started (first use of SIMMs in an IBM system for *most* of the system RAM), mainly viewed as using excess XT cases (I don't know if that holds water, because the motherboard development would cost more than recycling the case metal). I really wonder why it is so difficult for you. Really. Next time use a Dremel or a sharp metal saw and not that big two-hand construction side concrete cutter, will you ? :-D -- Very friendly greetings from Peter in Germany http://members.aol.com/mcapage0/mcaindex.htm *** Reply to: peterwendt@aol.com only ! *** Hi! > I really wonder why it is so difficult for you. > Really. Because I make things difficult. I don't like to, but I seem to be quite good at it. :-) I used a Dremel with the smallest bit I could find. It opened the chip with ease, although not as cleanly as the pictures on your page show. With the Dremel, I seem to lose one or both battery contacts. I either can't find the contact in the potting compound or I'm buzzing right through it. At 5,000 RPM (minimum speed on my Dremel tool) it is hard to say. William Practice makes perfect? I decided power tools weren't the right approach, at least not for me. I pic...

Looking for Spss/Pc+ V2.x software for IBM Pc/Xt/at (1988)
Old timers, I am looking for nostalgia software for SPSS/PC. Specifically, SPSS/PC+ V2.x software for the IBM PC XT/AT that came out in 1988. I need the full version not the student version. The Graphics add-on is desirable but not necessary. Any usable media or download, e.g., ftp, is fine. Or just attach it to an email reply. SPSS itself does not have it anymore. As you would expect, each keyboard mates with one of the 5251 displays. It's easy to tell which display was the system console (the badly burned-in one on top) and which was the primary application console (the pretty badly burned-in one on the bottom). The one in the middle that has no visible burn-in probably saw very little use. I don't think that the value of the system will improve very much in another 10 to 20 years like the seller hopes, but everyone is entitled to dream. If anyone was interested in a set of S/36 manuals, this auction looks like a good bet, you might get a complete set and a few spares. A small bid will probably win, then you have the seller ship you all of the manuals via Media Mail, and then the seller could do as he liked with the "heavy metal" (of course, you'd have to make sure that the seller would go along with this scheme in advance). Was the IBM PC Open Hardware?

In another thread, DFS actually raises an interesting point imo. My recollection of the IBM PC is a very expensive piece of kit, which had two advantages. 1. It was IBM ("nobody ever got fired for buying IBM") 2. With the IBM name, the concept of the Personal Computer became a serious, business-thing, no longer a toy or hobbyist or niche piece of equipment. However, I have another recollection. Within ...

Now, at the bottom of the keyboard between the right arrow key and the keypad 0 is the system end of the keyboard cable -- but that's just resting against the bottom edge of the keyboard case. > Touch screens are neat.
