I think this has a 386 processor and 2 megs of RAM. I think it runs at about 20 MHz and the hard drive is 20 megs but not positive. I played around with it for a while and it appears to be in very good shape however I could not get the floppy drive to work. The floppy says 1.44 Meg on it so I believe it is a standard replacement. All the keys are working, hard drive does not show any errors. Display is actually a monochrome plasma display is clear easy to read. Cosmetically it shows very little wear and is pretty clean. A modem and an ethernet card are installed in the standard ISA slots. Boots to Windows 3.1 or DOS and operating system is working well.. IBM P70 PS/2 Type 8573-061
Hello all: Thanks for your suggestions on my machine! The floppy issue seems to be something related to the speed (rpm) of the diskette in the drive as it's being read. With the cover off and the drive spinning (in vain) trying to read the disk, a light touch will most always get it spinning at the "right" rpm and it will read properly. The platter on the bottom seems to have a magnet at a position on the platter which flies past a transistorized sensor (black in color ,toward bottom front) which I assume measures rotational velocity? Whatever the case, this "sensor" has an adjustment, which I plan on playing with. The unit, while new, IS 17 years old and I assume things could easily deteriorate over this time period. I am more concerned with getting my HP LaserJet 4 (with a HP JetDirect card installed) to be able to talk via TCP/IP to WFW 3.11, which I currently have on this machine. I fear this topic is for another newsgroup, though! Scott ...

IBM PS2 P70 Type 8573-061 and RS6000 SCSI
Hello: Remember the conversation some of us had about my P70 and the SCSI controller on eBay? Well, everthing arrived and (before putting the SCSI controller in) the machine ran WFW 3.11 with great power. What an awesome system design! Nevertheless, I cannot get the machine to update itself once the SCSI card is installed! I've tried the ADF file at http://www.gilanet.com/ohlandl/IBM_SCSI/SCSI-FW.html#FW but the system displays an error message while reading the ADF file off the Ref. diskette I'm using. It says something about an error while reading the adf file for the adapter card in port two. The light on the card itself http://www.gilanet.com/ohlandl/IBM_SCSI/SCSI-FW.html#LED_Flash_Code stays lit during this whole process. Memory, for now, is a no-go. I purchased four old SIMM's from the parts bin at a local PC shop. None worked (as did not the ones I had in my possesion). Some are even IBM-branded, but all are above 2MB (I think) and that doesn't help. Thanks for all suggestions/help! Hi "Woody"... Sorry, couldn't resist... Dan Dan-the K wrote: > What is that wire going into the keyboard between CTRL and =E2=86=90 ? Dan, I enlarged the system photo to 400%, and all I can see between the right Ctrl key and the left arrow key is the normal plastic keyboard case -- no wire (maybe my eyes are getting too old). Now, at the bottom of the keyboard between the right arrow key and the keypad 0 is the system end of the keyboard cable -- but that's just resting against the bottom edge of the keyboard case. > Touch screens are neat. I used them when I worked on the PLATO > Computer Aided Instruction system for the University of Illinois, > Chicago Medical Center. It's a small world -- I once owned the rx/uia/cerl account (for the non-PLATO folks, uia meant "University of Illinois Author", and CERL was the Computer-based Education Research Laboratory). Auction: IBM (2-)8MB 386 Memory Expansion Adapter?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6810198930 Not totally sure as to the item, but it's 32-bit, has IBM-style EC patch wires and the SIMMs look like some 2MB ones I've got in my pile. Fully populated. -- Regards, Tim Clarke (a.k.a. WBST) Hi! Tim, it's an FDDF ("Enhanced" 386 Memory Expansion) adapter. It and the FDDE look almost exactly the same (If memory serves I think the controller IC is identical between cards.) The FDDE has a lot more "little chips" on it and no rework is present on any of my FDDE cards. I want to say this can do 4MB SIMMS. IIRC it will give you no more than 16MB RAM no matter what SIMMs are on it. I think you must have BOPT103 and two cards to do that...haven't played with that one personally. 16MB has always been in enough in my 70s and 80s. William ...

Auction: IBM PS/2 model 80, 386 type 8580-A31
Feb 02, 2013 20:55:18 PST Or a BIN. Wichita, Kansas A bit spendy, BUT this is an Axx system. I have no room at all. Hmm, a 8580-A31 is a 386DX25 comouter. Earlier models were either 16MHz or 20MHz. I see an XGA video card, an IBM SCSI Adapter/A, an HP card, possibly a SCSI scanner controller, a possible serial / lpt card, and down at the bottom appears to be an early AOX McMaster 486 upgrade adapter, sans memory. The 211 error is memory. If you look right below the power plug going into the planar, both white sockets are empty. Files are freely available for the 8580-Axx and the McMaster. The planar memory cards are available in people's stashes. The Axx could take the 4MB size, and was a good system. The drive support structure could take an IBM dual drive sled OR it could accept an HD mounted in one of the Model 57/77/95 drive sleds. Or you can even use a 5 1/2 to 3.5" drive adapter and put AT drive rails (like those used on CD Rom drives) I'd like to give a look ... what's the auction number ?
