If you are willing to settle for a 10Mbps MCA NIC, you have several to
choose from, IBM and non-IBM -- some are AUI only (or 10Base2 only),
some support two kinds of connections, some support all three. If
your 8580 does not have a processor upgrade (16, 20 or 25MHz 80386),
I'd stick with a 10Mbps NIC -- the Olicom NIC is the most common
10/100 MCA NIC, but even it can be hard to find at times, and it is
processor-hungry. Even if you had one of the 50MHz 80486 processor
upgrades, the Olicom 10/100 performance is likely to be only slightly
better than one of the 10Mbps NICs, and might actually be worse!

Ebay has a number of Etherlink III cards on it.

You won't find many 10/100 cards, there are a few 9-k/9-Q RS/6000 but
they don't work in PS/2. The only 10/100 is the Olicom OC-2335, which
isn't the best card (based on an ISA chipset)

They do work in PS/2, and I'm still working on the device driver for
the card under NT. Louis thanks again for the spare card.

Since the OP is calling himself "debian user" and appears to be posting from
a system running Debian, it seems appropriate to ask if there's a Linux
driver.

There is free linux source code for the PCnet chipset on AMD's
website. Not sure of the changes yet that need to be made but will
share with the group when I do so that somebody can follow up with
Linux support.

Takes time.

The Linux kernel already includes drivers for the PCnet chips, however
they of course only work for 'standard' PCI designs. The real challenge
is finding out how the PCI/MCA bridge chip on the 9-K has to be
programmed. I have such a board here, but its I/O window doesn't show
anything that looks like the PCnet's config or I/O registers :-(

Linux on IBM PS2/80 8085

But even only in text mode it will be slow. Perhaps it is possible to replace glibc by "diet libc" (http://www.fefe.de/dietlibc) for some binaries to improve performances (Never try). You can also try with a debian. As a recovering man (I'm a man, but I can change, if I have to, I guess) I would like to know your full type-model. It will be on a sticker on the rear of the Model 80. It will look like 8580-xxx. Your problem with the extension MAY be dust in the slot. Have you tried compressed air? Also, some memory cards use an init adf and Linux may not fully grok the card (I dunno). What memory expansion card did you try? Give us the adf # that you used. IBM 100/10 ISA Ethernet Driver
I recently upgraded an old PC with the IBM 100/10 ISA ethernet card from Win98 to Win2K. I was frustrated to find that IBM is no longer supporting the card and Win2K does not natively support this card. After installing Win2K, the card appears in the device manager as "IBM FEI". A different poster suggested that the Intel PRO 100 ISA drivers might work. I'm confirming that this does work. I had to manually select the driver type from the list of known equipment but it is working fine. The drivers are still available from Intel at: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-d...
