Dear friends:
Does somebody know where to get a disk drive larger than 60 GB for my
X41 Tablet PC?
IBM/Lenovo did a big mistake designing the X41 Tablet PC with an 1.8"
hard drive, with an specific Hitachi interface that you cannot find in
any known USA store.
Last week I was in Florida, USA, and I went to any PC store that I
could find, among them CompUSA, BestBuy, etc. And nobody knew of these
strange hard drives.
Any hint? Is there a hope that those drives will be available in the
near future in the stores?
Thanks

Hello Juan,
what about an external USB harddisk?

Well, I have an extra drive in the Docking Station with 20 GB, but
what happens if I want to upgrade to Vista? It claims of 15 GB extra
free disk space inside the X41 box!!!!

My search could not find ANY 1.8" hard drive over 60GB. You may be
looking at a physical limitation to storage space on such a small drive. I
imagine over time this may improve.... but who knows how long....

There may be a Toshiba drive at 80GB:
http://tomshardware.co.uk/2006/04/28/small_is_beautiful_uk/page3.html
http://tinyurl.com/ygt4qc
I didn't investigate the appropriateness or otherwise of the connector.

Thanks a lot, I hope that Hitachi will make them with the appropriate
connector.
The connector in the X41-TP disk is the same as the connector of any
2.5" disk, but located in the longer side. In that way, the physical
dimension of the disk is 1.8" x 2.5".
In the meantime, one needs to wait. But I am pessimistic because I
heard the rumor that in its new Tablet PC, the Dual Core X60,
IBM/Lenovo will return to the 2.5" format.

Nothing to do with rumours - the X60 uses a 2 1/2" SATA drive.

Toshiba makes two standard 80 GB drives <http://sdd.toshiba.com/>:
* MK8007GAH (1.8-inch PMR HDD 80.0 GB, IDE connector)
* MK8009GAH (1.8-inch CE PMR HDD 80.0GB, ZIF connector)

You will need a hacksaw to shape either of them to fit into an X41.

"Toshiba intros 'world's most capacious' 1.8in HDD"
<http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/12/05/toshiba_intros_100gb_hdd/>
Toshiba has unveiled what it claims is the world's most capacious
1.8in hard drive, a tiny unit that nonetheless packs in 100GB of
unformatted storage space. To achieve that capacity, the company used
perpendicular recording.
The drive, the MK1011GAH, contains two 50GB platters, and four read
and write heads. The drive spins at 4,200rpm and has an average seek
time of 15ms. It connects across an ATA-7 bus. The drive consumes
0.3W of power, making it ideal, Toshiba indicated, for handhelds and
sub-notebooks.
Volume production of the drive begins in January 2007, Toshiba said.

They are deceptively very similar. The problem comes when you discover
that Toshiba placed its connector along the shorter side of the rectangle
and Hitachi has its connector along the longer side, so you would need to
cut about 20mm off the Toshiba if you inserted it to mate plug and socket.

Yes.... the Hitachi is 7mm high.... 1 mm thinner than the Toshiba....
not sure if that would be an issue but I see in your subsequent post that
the connectors are placed differently? Strange. I thought there was more
standardization than that... oh well...

As Tony Gold rightfully notes, neither of these units will fit in the
X4X
series.
No 1.8" HD with a ZIF connector will fit in anything other than an iPod
or
similar device.
No 1.8" HD with an IDE connector on the endframe will fit in an X4X as
they
require the Hitachi style interface where the IDE connector is on the
side
of the drive frame.

Won't fit in the X4X series for the aforementioned reasons John, only
offered with ZIF or _end_ mounted IDE connectors.

Yes, that is the problem.
And it is unbelievable that in the back of the Notebook, IBM/Lenovo
writes the instructions for the user about how to upgrade the disk
drive by himself!!!! How can I upgrade the disk drive by myself, if
nobody makes the upgrade????
I think that IBM/Lenovo can easily solve the problem if they really
wants to help their customers. Because the connector is exactly the
same of any Parallel ATA 2.5 drive, and it is located in the same
place, (and the drive specs seem to be the same too), you could
install a standard 2.5" drive there providing three things:
1) You get an extra internal bay for a 2.5" drive of the
IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad family (the thin bay where the hard disk is
screwed),
2) You forget to store the Tablet PC Pen in the Notebook itself
(you can store it in your shirt pocket without any problem),
3) AND IBM/Lenovo makes a new hard disk external cover for this
machine that allows the hard disk to extend to outside less than one
half inches in the front (the black cover).
Is somebody of IBM/Lenovo hearing this, or we should to resign to
discard machines that they are six months old because we cannot
upgrade them to the new version of the Operating System???? Please
note that the Vista Upgrade is *very important* for Tablet PCs.

The connectors are NOT the same. The Hitachi uses the standard 50 pin
plug as used in 2 1/2" ATA drives. The Toshiba uses a 44 pin socket
connector with a smaller pitch (distance between adjacent pins) on their
drives. To do what you want there is made an adapter which will allow you
to connect a Toshiba 1 1/8 drive to a host designed for Hitachi - but that
doesn't solve the 20mm protrusion problem, it just makes it a bit worse:
http://www.shopaddonics.com/mmSHOPADDONICS/Images/aat18ide25.gif
For more data http://www.shopaddonics.com and put AAT18IDE25 in the search
(I only discovered this device being offered but I have never tried it.)

A good reason to avoid the X4x.

Dear Anthony, please read my posting carefully, I am saying that the
X41-TabletPC , with the Hitachi drive, uses the same connector than
any 2.5" Parallel ATA 2.5" drive, so if IBM/Lenovo wants to help their
customers, it is not to difficult to use a 2.5" drive in the Thinkpad.

My apology for not understanding your comment; I thought you wanted to
mount the iPod style (Toshiba) drive into your X41 Tablet.
If you go with an X32 you will get pretty much what you want. Lenovo may
have stopped shipping them but you can still get them new from dealers.
