Replace the keyboard. Check eBay.

I've noticed that my spacebar doesn't always work as well. Is this a
common problem with X31s?

I've noticed that a bit of debris will cause the problems.
No Cheetos at the PC!

I noticed that the ALT key died while my girlfried was using the x31, and
she hits the keyboard as if it were a mechanical typewriter...

Careful vacuuming of the keyboard, or blowing out with compressed air,
can be helpful.

More likely debris than how hard she hits it (short of breaking the key)
-- membrane keyboards are quite tough.

In the meanwhile, is there a way to remap the ALT key to another key?

I lifted the keycaps and there was indeed a lot of fluffy dust.
No cheetos nor apple crumble though. Still hungry.
The keys are still not working.

There are numerous ways, but I personally use an excellent free one I
downloaded a while again from pcmagazine, called Tradekeys:

Actually it's the LEFT SHIFT, but that doesn't make any difference :-)

Same here. I remapped the CAPS LOCK key (which I hate, at least in that
position) to LEFT SHIFT (the dead key), so I hit two birds with one stone
:-)

I use the IBM/Lenovo ThinkVantage Keyboard Customizer to set a longer
time delay on the CapsLock key. That way I retain the functionality for
when I need it while still avoiding accidental engagement.

Probably John Navas typed into a real computer:

Tell that to any early 1980s Sinclair Spectrum owner...
