Hi, i have a Thinkpad T60 with a built-in Matsushita UJ-842 DVD-Writer.
I got only problems with this drive, DVD-writing is impossible,
DVD-reading is impossible, only CDs works.
It´s not a problem with the OS, since DVD-writing also fails under Linux.
Booting from DVD is also impossible, so I guess it´s really a problem
with the drive itself (i tried to boot from an Ubuntu-DVD, which also
fails...).
Firmware is up to date.
Does anyone have similar problems or a solution for this, or should I
send the drive right back to Lenovo?

I would recommend to do so. Apparently they have obvious problems with
that. As I know from our company many laptops already got their DVD
writers changed.

I'd contact Lenovo - especially if it's still under warranty. If you're
lucky, they'll send you a replacement and you'll have to return the
non-working one. A "plug-in" DVD drive is definitely a FRU (Field
Replaceable Unit).

Right back. Sounds like the DVD laser has failed, a not uncommon
problem. Happened to me on a Panasonic DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive, and
the replacement from Lenovo solved the problem.
