When I use my Microsoft Bluetooth mouse with my ThinkPads, I cannot use the 
extra back/forwards buttons, or the sideways scrolling.  This is because you 
cannot have the Intellipoint software installed at the same time as the 
TrackPoint driver.

So I have to use the Bluetooth mouse without the special functions and 
without being able to adjust the tracking and scroll speed, so not to 
interfere with the TrackPoint, which I use most of the time.

Is there a similar problem when using Logitech mice, or can the Logitech 
software live alongside the TrackPoint driver?

I guess this is really a problem that Lenovo needs to address?

Are you sure that the scroll button settings on Trackpoint are not 
interfered with by the Logitech software?  Do you use the middle button?  Do 
the extra buttons work on the mouse?

It 'works' with the Intellipoint software as well, but then you only use the 
generic drivers on the Trackpoint, with basic functionality, or vice versa.

I'm not *sure* of anything these days.  I checked, both the Trackpoint and 
touch pad seem to work normally.

There's an "UltraNav Wizard", possibly a Logitech function, under mouse in the 
Control panel.  I would suggest setting it to default; "Point with either 
device".  Otherwise my mouse works normally: Left and right buttons, scroll a 
page at a time and use the scroll wheel for the center button.

I meant the middle button under the keyboard.  When you have Intellipoint 
installed, the middle button cannot be used for scrolling with the 
Trackpoint.

Ah, that sounds promising.  From what you have said it looks like Logitech 
mice do not suffer from the same incompatibility that Microsoft mice have 
with the Trackpoint.

If anybody can confirm that the middle Trackpoint button can be used for 
scrolling at the same time as the special functions on the mouse (like 
forward/back buttons), I'll order a Logitech Bluetooth mouse.

That is the button that my query is all about.  Either that button does not 
work, and I cannot scroll using the Trackpoint, or I cannot use the extra 
features of the mouse.

I don't know why you do not use that button.  I feel handicapped without it, 
when using the Trackpoint, which is what I use most of the time.

As your mouse does not appear to have any extra features, like back/forwards 
navigation buttons or sideways scrolling, there is no real reason for you to 
install the Logitech software anyway, and I am still unsure whether Logitech 
mice share this issue, especially as you say you do not use the Trackpoint 
scrolling.  Thanks for your help though.

Yeah I do.  I do things fast on my computers.  When I use the Trackpad I use 
one hand (right hand).  Index finger on Trackpoint nipple, my thumb on the 
three buttons, and I move my little finger to the grey navigation buttons 
over the cursor keys.

Similar thing with my five button mouse on my workstation, with my left hand 
on Ctrl, Alt, and Spacebar, for keyboard shortcuts while using ArchiCAD, 3ds 
max and Photoshop (my main three apps).

Lamers do not need the extra buttons.

I do it faster, disabled normal use of the trackpad and turned it into a 
scrollpad for quick moving on pages.  The trackpoint itself I have 
enabled press-to-select which allows me to not even screw with buttons in 
order to select and drag things.

I didn't know that was possible.  How did you do that?  I don't see how that 
us faster, but my ThinkPads are both X-Series anyway, so I do not have a 
Trackpad.  A few years ago I had a Sony VAIO which I used the trackpad 
gestures to scroll, minimise and close windows.  I don't know if Thinkpads 
with Trackpads have that, but it's a pretty cool system.

point-to-select on the Trackpoints, but I have used a T-series that does.

The reason I want to be able to sometimes use a Bluetooth mouse with my 
ThinkPad is because when I have been doing a lot of work/websurfing my index 
finger can feel a bit sore.  Using it for clicking as well would only make 
that worse, and I would rather use my otherwise unused thumb instead.  It's 
very ergonomic to do so.

Anyway, we all have different preferences, and mine is to use these extra 
buttons.

I don't know if the windows drivers support it, I use Linux and it's 
configurable in Xorg.  I do know you can tweak it's normal functionality 
quite a bit in windows if you use the ultranav drivers.

I think all T2x and up series thinkpads support it... the trackpoint 
hasn't been changed in years on thinkpads, thinkwiki has a writeup on the 
generations of trackpoint.

Maybe the X series do not... I've only used T-series and recent R-series.
