Why is pay per view so expensive?

  • Follow

?The latest movies on pay per view are $4.99 each 24 hour period - either on
Apple TV or my local cable company.

I can get the same movie for a buck from a Red Box machine OR for free if
you have a Netflix account.

So how can they get away with charging so much?

Redbox has a fairly limited selection... but, sure, when they offer the same
movies they are a *much* better deal than $4.99. But Apple TV new offers
movies for 99 cents... essentially the same price but no need to even go to
the store... and also $1.99 HD which is about 2x as much but you can easily
pick and watch without running to the store (though you can also pick and
reserve with Redbox, which is pretty darn cool!)

apple tv $0.99 rentals are t.v shows. movie rentals start at
$2.99/$3.99 for sd/hd.

?Unfortunately, only a handful of movies are $.99. Most of them start at
$2.99 (nearly three times the price of Redbox).

This isn't just Apple. Everyone who offers pay per view is doing the same
thing.

I think the question should be for how long will Netflix be able to
charge so little. Right now they're able to do it because it costs them
less then mailing a handful of DVDs a month. If that changes, that is
to say either studios demand a small fee per play or bandwidth costs go
up, expect more limits or fees.

Same reason you'd pay $8 a person to see it within a fixed two hour
window. You want to watch it now, not wait months for a cheap DVD to
become available

?When I go to the movies (rare), it's because I want to experience it on a
huge screen, not because I have to watch it NOW. I don't own a 20' high TV.

Pay per view movies have not been all that successful on cable or
satellite. Special events sell well though.

Pay per view faces the same competition that drove Blockbuster into
bankruptcy, NetFlix and Redbox. For the most popular movies RedBox is a
far better deal, without the need for expensive real estate like
Blockbuster, or shipping and receiving expenses like NetFlix.

Because it's for lazy people that don't know how to check Scene
Release sites, and use torrents to download 1080p .MKV files.

There's also competition from Comcast's "On Demand" service. They have
an utter shitload of free movies on there.

Back in my college days we used to stream PPV events through a public
proxy. It was live for people who had a fast enough connection.
Those were the days!
