Will Max OS 10 play AVI files made on Linux?

  • Follow

Hi;

I copied several AVI files to a DVD for a friend. During copying, I
noticed that one of the choices in the software ( K3B ) was
"filesystem type". I chose "Linux/Windows".

My friend has a Mac running OS 10 and my box is a PC running the
latest, greatest Ubuntu Linux.

Will she have any troubles reading or playing the AVI files on the
DVD?

Thanks in advance for any info

AVI is not a codec. AVI is a container format which can host a wide
variety of video/audio codecs. That being said, using the Perian
Quicktime codec package, any movie player that uses QuickTime can play
most popular formats. Worse case, anything that can play with VLC or
MPlayer on Linux should work with VLC/Mplayer for the Mac.

XVid is a better codec. QuickTime is pretty crappy.

There is no such thing as a "Quicktime codec" or even a Quicktime
container. Quicktime is a media framework that uses whatever video/
audio codec you have installed in your system -- including XVid.

But thanks for playing......

Quicktime still isn't a codec.
