My copy of Appleworks will not open now that I've installed both the
Security Update to OS X 10.4.5 and the new iTunes 6.0.4.
Specifically, on double-clicking the Appleworks icon, the App. will
start to open and build a font directory, but then it abruptly quits.
Anyone got any suggestions or ideas?

You might have one or more corrupt fonts.
Start up Font Book, click on "All Fonts", then select one of the fonts
in the list, command-A to select all your fonts, then go to the File
menu and select "Validate Fonts".
Might help, probably won't hurt.

Between the time I first posted my query about Appleworks and reading
your suggestion, I was able to open Appleworks via the terminal's `open'
command. I finished wring a message, quit the App. and tried clicking
the icon. The dumb prgm. opened just fine.
By this time i read your post. I checked all the fonts and sure enough 3
fonts were severely damaged. They are Seoul.dfont, Song.dfont, and Fang
Song.dfont. Think I should remove them?

Unless you use Asian languages, you'll never miss them.

This problem comes from time to time, when upgrading / updating the=20
system files in OS X...
Therefore it's always a good idea to repair permissions after any new=20
installation of system files and updates like itunes or other system=20
integrated programs.

If you don't use Korean, then you might delete these fonts, but I won't=20
recommend it, since you also will be unable to read multilingual=20
webpages, if the are locked to a prime font, which I found that many=20
Asian sites are. - When you first installed the OS X, you've probably=20
run a default installation, which includes the Asian systems as well. In =
'system Preferences' -> 'Blobal' you can disable the Asian support=20
whithout getting other problems. This will only affect the systemwide=20
Asian settings and not the accessing of multilingual webpages, if the=20
fonts are in the fonts folder...
Another thing is - these fonts are not corrupted or damaged. I don't=20
know, why FontBook always shows these fonts as 'damaged'. FontBook does=20
the same here on both my 10.3.9 and 10.4.5... If I instead run a=20
verification / validation of fonts using Linotype FontExplorer X or=20
FontReserve X, the fonts are shown as 'valid' / 'no damaged fonts...'
Cheers, Erik Richard
