Can't print to HP LaserJet printer via Windows Printing

I can print to one of the HP LaserJet 2100tn printers via AppleTalk. But when
I try to add the printer (via the Printer Setup Utility), I can't see it.

1. I click the Add button
2. I select Windows Printing from the drop-down list
3. I select a workgroup from the lower drop-down list

No printers show up in the list.

There are 2 HP LJ printers on the net, but none of them show up under Windows
Printing.

Am I doing something wrong?

Also, I tried adding a printer via IP Printing. But when I try to print, I
get no indication that the printer has received the job; no output.

Maybe I'm not using the right IP address for the printer? How do I find out
the IP address?

Mac OS X 10.3.4; HP LaserJet 2100tn

Thanks,

I'm not familiar with the 2100, but I see it is a network printer, so it must
have the Ethernet connector.

Other HP LJ printers have menus accessible from the control panel. One option
is to print out a configuration page that shows the state of its comm port(s)
and lists IP addresses, et cetera.

One thing to look for is whether AppleTalk is turned on or not. If it isn't,
you should be able to turn it on from one of the menus. If it is, you should
be able to see the printer using the HP LJ printer utility in Classic mode.
This utility is capable of setting most of the printer's parameters as long as
AppleTalk already enabled.

Now, can you tell me what you mean by selecting "Windows Printing"? I don't
recall that option. I usually choose AppleTalk printing, but AppleTalk
printers usually show up under one other add-printer option as well. Maybe I
should go and check that again, now that I've updated the OS!

I own this same printer and I print to it with IP printing. I select
socket/HPJetDirect but you do need to know the IP address.

You can test the address you have via telnet. The JetDirect server will
let you login by telnet, assuming you have the correct address.

Assuming it's a private address like mine:
----------------------------------------------------
telnet 192.168.0.3
Trying 192.168.0.3...
Connected to 192.168.0.3.
Escape character is '^]'.

HP JetDirect

Please type "?" for HELP, or "/" for current settings
> ?

        To Change/Configure Parameters Enter:
        Parameter-name: value <Carriage Return>
----------------------------------------------------

Software like IPNetMonitorX might help you find the machine address. In
my case a local address scan of 192.168.0.1/24 (my entire private
network) using ping showed this:

192.168.0.3 Sent Received 0.002 00:10:83:54:32:1EHEWLETT-PACKARD
COMPANY

That confirms that it is at 192.16.0.3

I use IP printing even for my Windows machines but if you need Windows
printing, you'll want to use a Windows machine and login to the
JetDirect server from Windows IE, JetDirect uses a web server and you
can set it up from there. It won't load from the Mac OS.

To answer your original question,

HP Jet Direct is the method of printing if you have an HP printer, and
you need the IP address or the network WINS name if you are accessing a
network printer in a domain administered by Active Directory (the
Windows way of providing directory access services).

IP printing is for non-HP printers that are connected via IP (general
IP).

Windows printing is for printing to a Windows-server administered
queue. For example, in a corporation, your Windows 2000 server called
"dummy" might be the "print server." In that case, the printer is
connected to "dummy.domain.com" (we hope). You choose Windows printing
so that "dummy" can decide whose print jobs have what preference or
ordering. However, it's fairly problematic, so I don't recommend you
do this unless exact WYSIWYG is not important.

With OS X, there is no need to use AppleTalk to connect to a printer.
Basically, if it's HP, use JetDirect, if it's not, use IP. If you're
at home and you have 2-10 computers hooked up, use AppleTalk because
the broadcasting won't matter and it will be the easiest to use.

I had a lot of trouble getting my HP 1012 to print via my Windows XP
system to which it is connected because of bad drivers for that printer
model. From various google searches and various installation attempts
I found hpijs-foomatic-1.5.ppc.dmg (and if I remember correctly with
GhostScript) I was able to print correctly. Occasionally the printer
prints an unrecoginized PCL message which I can fix by powering off and
back on the printer.

HP C5280 can't print photos properly, HP can't fix, any suggestions?
Several months ago, I bought an HP C5280 All-In-One. I already have a good laser printer, so the only reason why I bought the C5280 was to be able to print high-quality photo prints. The C5280 has been unable to do that since the day I bought it. HP has sent me two replacement printers and five replacement photo cartridges. While the quality varies from cartridge to cartridge, it doesn't vary from printer to printer, and none of the catridges or printers produce prints of acceptable quality (in particular, printers which don't have stripes on them from jets in the cart...

HP 8250 can't print borderless prints?
I just got the HP 8250 and it has an option to print borderless prints. You press layout, you press it until you get to borderless print and then press ok. I am using 4x6 paper and have tried this in Photoshop. I have made the image size 6x4.2. Nevertheless, it prints with a small border around the picture. What am I doing wrong? Is there some special setting in Photoshop or am I setting the layout for borderless wrong? Tiger Can't Print to Windows Printer
I've been trying to print to any of several printers attached to a server running Windows Server 2003. I started by downloading the latest Mac drivers for the printers from the manufacturer web sites (Xerox 460ST and HP 4100dtn). Then from either the Print dialog or the printer setup utility I can add a printer, select More Printers, then select the Windows workgroup. I see all the servers, and when I select the proper server I am asked for my Windows ID and password. I can then see the attached printers, select one, and choose the proper driver. Can't print from any app. in Mac OS X
A computer here was recently upgraded with HP's LaserJet 2300 drivers. Afterwards, it's no longer possible to print from any application. If you choose Print from anything, the system churns for a couple seconds, then the application "unexpectedly quits." I picked up Print Center Repair (the system is running 10.2.8) and even went so far as to completely reset the print environment, but it didn't help. What else is there to do, short of re- installing the OS? Thanks, Mike -- Michael T. Davis | Systems Specialist: ChE,MSE E-mail: davism@...

Can't print A5 on HP Laserjet 1200
I've been trying to print out documents in A5 on a HP Laserjet 1200 (PowerBook G4 running Panther 10.3.7) using A5 copy paper. The printing invariably starts halfway down the page and prints off the bottom edge. Usually, but not always, the left-hand margin is also right out at the edge of the page. This happens in both Word X for Mac and TextEdit. I've tried putting the A5 paper in the normal copy tray and bringing the arms in to hold it firmly, and I've tried putting a few sheets in the upper tray, also bringing the arms there in to hold it firmly. No difference. ...
