Canon IJ Network Scan Utility

  • Follow

Bought and installed a Canon Pixma MX860 networked multi-function inkjet
printer on MacBook running OS 10.4.11 (something I'll certainly never do
again!).

How do I get the "Canon IJ Network Scan Utility" icon to disappear from
my menu bar?

If it's running, I don't think you can.

My guess is there's a program that's run at startup either via
/Library/Startup/<directory> or via the launchd facility. It will take
some poking around to find out yes or no on this.

Another thing to look into is if something got installed on the system
in /Applications. There might be an uninstall script.

Can you do some serious poking and find out what got installed on the
machine by using Pacifist on the install receipt package.

Then strip out the stuff that was installed by hand and reboot.

It's a login-item

(Apple-menu > System Preferences... > Accounts, tab:Login Items).
Just delete it there.

Yup -- it's there. Thanks much.

Interesting: You have to check the items in there to _hide_ them, not
to activate them.

Should one want any random piece of hardware or software, like a Canon
printer, to be able to put stuff in that location -- and therefore
another icon in one's menu bar -- without even telling, much less
asking, you?

I gave up using "should" a long time ago. I'm a lot happier. If you
live your life out of "should" I don't think you'll ever be happy.

If you want things done your way, do them yourself.
