I have an ancient FileMaker Pro database with my addresses. I'd like
to transfer these into the Mac OS X Address Book, as I don't have an
up-to-date version of FileMaker and would prefer not to have to delve
into Classic when I want to use my address database!
How can I construct a file that will be importable into Address Book?
I'm not afraid of creating scripts or calculation fields in FileMaker
to crank out the results.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Export as tab-delimited text, then use this excellent freeware app to
import into address book.

Thanks for the speedy advice, I'll try that!
CVOICE books I'm planning on taking the CVOICE 642-432 exam within the next month and I

DSP Books Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me on a book to buy. I am
quite new to the world of DSP and would like a book from probably low
intermediate to advance topics, preferably quite detailed and through on the
maths. Something that was mainly concerned with DSP filtering would be good.
Does anyone have any good recommendations?
Thanks in Advance,
If you can get a copy, go for Oppenheim & Schafer 1975.
It is/was the seminal work on the subject for the engineer-in-the-street.

Why not just order one from amazon.co.uk? I live in Spain
and books from Amazon arrive here in about three days.

FileMaker annoyances Anyone else cheesed off about FileMaker's incompatability with Leopard - and
the fact that a compatibility update won't be released until November 17?
Or about their stated intent that no updates will be issued for any version
prior to FileMaker 9? Or that FileMaker mobile will be dropped December 19
(with support to end June 18, 2008)?
Hmmm ... now that mobile is no longer in the picture (which is the reason I
use FileMaker), maybe it's time to take another look at the MacOS X version
of Panorama ... which I've licenced, but never used. <sigh>

Good Book Not to long ago I got a copy of "The Non-Designer's Design & Type Books" by
Robin Williams. The book is actually two books in one binding, and each of
the books is an updated version of a prior release. I've found the book to a
valuable help in both issues about grammatical style and the use of fonts and

- Modern Compiler Implementation In C
- Advanced Compiler Design And Implementation
- Compilers: Principles, Techniques And Tools
- Modern Compiler Design
I'd like to buy a complete book, that covers all the aspects of
language design and implementation. I don't need something too easy,
but not to difficult too!

Books on Debuggers Hi:
Could anyone please recommend any good books on how to write a debugger?

I have never heard of even a competent one. There have been books on
how to write the user interfaces and high-level facilities, but most
of the aspects are the sort of messy engineering that was learnt by
apprenticeship and not written up. ...

Compiler books Hi all,
I currently own the following books:
"Advanced compiler design & implementation", Steven S. Muchnick
"Engineering a compiler", Keith D. Cooper & Linda Torczon
"Compiler design in C", Allen Holub.
I would like to have your suggestions. I'm looking for a compiler book
with emphasis on instruction selection & register allocation.
Specifically, for generating code from C expressions.
[If you just want to compile expressions, Holub should be the most directly
useful, so long as you get a copy of the enormous errata sheet and no...
book on C Today I went out to a book store in search of a good book on C,
I know quite a lot of C already so I wasnt looking for one of those
"Learn C in 21 Days" type of books, I was more after a book that
would serve as a reference and I could look at when my memory
had failed me and needed refreshing. I had numerous choices as
far as C reference books, The one I chose is called
"The Complete reference, C, fourth edition"

choice or has different recommendations. I am going to bui...
A JavaCC book Hi all -
Folks working with Java may be familiar with the LL(k) parser
generator JavaCC. This fine utility has been around almost as long as
Java has, but the documentation has always been slightly lacking.
Thus my new book: "Generating Parsers With JavaCC". It covers the
things you would expect - token specifications, lexical states, the
ins and outs of syntactic and semantic predicates, and building ASTs.
It also includes many practical bits on effective testing techniques,
using the JavaCC Eclipse plugin, and so forth. The book's web site

Strange FileMaker bug
There's a peculiar, although trivial, bug in Mac FileMaker 5.x (Mac),
and I'm fairly sure I've noticed it in earlier versions too.
When you choose the Delete All Records option from the menu, FileMaker
will sometimes beep three times and display the "Are you sure?"
message, but other times it'll only beep once and display the message.
"Just trying to help whenever I can." :o)

Book recommendation required I am looking for a book on compiler design. I have dutifully looked
over the FAQ which contains a comprehensive list (my thanks to the
author). However, the short reviews listed there are not sufficient to
help me make a choice. These books usually are expensive and need to
be custom ordered; I would not like to end up with a book I dislike
:-S. Looking at the Google archives of this newsgroup did not prove to
be very helpful either. Hence this message.
I would like a book which covers in good detail the inner workings of
a compiler, without resorting to terse mathematical formalisms. Some
