How to copy old 33.3 RPM Records to DVD/CD?

  • Follow

I have a stack of 33.3 RPM records from eons ago, and I need to copy
them to another medium. I'm thinking that a CD would possibly last
longer than a cassette - and I am eventually going to lose the player.

If I have a modular Player for the records, what do I heed to plug it
into my G4 so I can do something constructive with it?

What program do I need to translate the tracks into something that a CD
Player will recognize? (I am also curious as to whether the straight CD
Player will play Mac formatted CDs?)

Thanks, folks.

It depends on which model G4 you have. If it has a line-in, you need
the Y-connector to go from your two audio out channels to a stereo
miniplug that you insert into the line-in. Lacking a line-in, you
probably should get a USB device like the Griffin iMic that will let
you bring the audio in through USB.

I usually use CD Spin Doctor (part of the Toast 6 suite of programs) to
capture the audio, clean it up, and split it into tracks. Following
that, you can burn audio CDs from Toast or iTunes.

A straight CD player won't play Mac-formatted CDs (or
Windows-formatted, for that matter). The CDs played by a standard CD
player must conform to the "Red Book" specification, also known as
CD-DA (compact disc-digital audio).

I take it that you're not willing to buy them again on CD, and/or that
not all of them are available on CD.

I've a 33rpm deck plugged into a Griffin iMic which is itself plugged
into a USB port on my G4 iMac.

The setup works well, and I tidy up in the freeware "Audacity" (d/l from
VersionTracker), import into iTunes and burn the CDs straight from the
appropriate iTunes playlist.

The "FinalVinyl"app supplied with the iMic I found a total disaster!

The stack of LPs was a lot higher a few years ago. I seem to be the
only human who likes this music (of the 1970s). Copying is my only
alternative.
