I just bought a MacBook Air and tried to connect my HP LaserJet 3015 via the 
wireless network.  The printer is working correctly on the LAN using a 
couple of Windows pcs.  The printer is connected to a print server and then 
connected to the wireless network.  As I am new in Mac OS, can someone give 
me guidance how to configure the Mac pc to print to the printer.  Your 
assistance is appreciated.

When I added a Brother HL-5250DN to my network, the Printer Setup 
Utility (it's on /Applications/Utilities) "just saw it".  I had the 
option of printing using the Bonjour protocol that the printer 
broadcasts natively or assigning a static IP and printing via CUPS.  I 
chose the latter (old sysadmin habits die hard).  Once you define the 
printer, you should be able to print to it from the printer setup menu.  

If you can't "see" it, perhaps your system is have a problem with the 
WiFi network.  According HP's site, this printer should just show up as 
it speaks Bonjour.

There is no Printer Setup Utility under /Applications/Utilities but have 
Terminal.  I am using Leopard 10.5.2. and do not need any driver installed 
for printer usage according to HP statement.

That is very news but HP just told the user that they are lucky but did not 
tell them how to configure it.  The list is placed under How to install and 
setup the printer on Macintosh but the instruction is for previous OS using 
Terminal.  Where is the Printer setup utility which sounds a user friendly 
utility rather than Terminal that uses prompt command?

As I am a new user of Mac OS, I do not understand Bonjour protocol (Is it 
similar to tcpip protocol?) and CUPS.  I have configured the printer as IP 
192.168.0.5 and all other Windows pcs are printing to it successfully for 
long.  I might miss something very obvious and need your further guidance.

Bonjour is a broadcast network protocol that devices like printers use 
to announce their presence on a network.  I know it works for wired 
connections because both my printers just show up in the Printer dialog 
on 10.4.11.  I've seen others post on this forum that the WiFi router 
didn't work for Bonjour printers, making a hardwire connection required 
to see a Bonjour printer.  If you have a Linksys "worthog" WRT54GL:

it should just work.  Belkin and DLINK not so much so.

I don't know what 10.5 uses to configure printers, so you're going to 
have to take that up with either Apple (take the printer and your 
Airbook into your closest Apple store after you setup a Genius Bar 
appointment and they'll help you) or you might get additional help on 
this forum.

Apple doesn't really do house calls (unless you're Steve Jobs), so you 
may end up paying someone to come to your business to sort this out if 
you can't bring the printer into an Apple Store to have them set it up 
for you.

Try this (works for me on several wireless Macs and an HP LaserJet
P2015 connected as yours is.):

Ensure that the HP is turned on and ready and that you are connected to
the wireless network.

Open System Preferences and select the "Print & Fax" Preference Pane. I
assume that in the window that opens you will see no printers in the
left column--where a list of installed printers appears. Click the plus
sign + at the bottom of the left column to add a printer.

In the dialog box that opens the "Default" tab should be selected.
Click it if it is not. Wait a few moments (in my case, perhaps 10
seconds). The name of the HP printer should appear under Printer Name.
Click on the name once to select it.

Under the Printer Name window are three lines: Name, Location, and
Print Using. Information should appear in the first and third lines.
You may rename the printer in the first line. You may type a
description of its location in the second line. (Both of the above are
optional.) The third line, "Print Using:" should show "HP LaserJet 3015
Series" or similar -- the Mac OS has automatically selected the proper
driver for the printer.

At the bottom right, click "Add." Done. Your printer is ready to use.

The above procedure works for me every time on every Mac (we have 10 or
so Macs in our house, five of them in daily use.) If the procedure
doesn't work for you, please post that information and we'll delve more
deeply.

Michael Vilain suggested "Printer Setup Utility" in the Utilities
folder. M. Vilain must be using an earlier version of the OS, as that
utility has been replaced by the "Print & Fax" Preference Pane.

Thanks for your information.  I tried your suggested way with the following 
result.

In System Preferences, I found Print & Fax (quite similar to Windows OS) and 
clicked into it.  There were two printers over there: My printer and Adobe 
PDF 8.0 and were in idle status.  At the beginning, I believe it should be 
working now.  I tried to print a page from Word.  The print job showed that 
the Printer Paused and job status was stopped.  I tried to click the button 
of Resume Printer and the printer became Printer Ready but the print job 
status remained Stopped.  I clicked Resume button (Resume printing of 
selected jobs) and the printer changed to Printer Paused.

My HP LaserJet 3015 is a USB printer and it is connected to a Level One 
FPS-3003 print server and then the print server is connected to the LAN 
switch.  It works correctly on all Windows pc for long.  I now suspect if 
the print server is working for Mac or not.  From the installation menu, it 
states HP-UX, Unix and RFC-1179 LDP System in addition to Windows under OS 
requirements.  How do I know if it works with Mac or not?

Your further advice is appreciated.

If ou have the original CDs accompagned with the printer - try the=20
following...
- Connect the printer to the prefered method - here network switch.
- Turn ON the printer
- Insert the CD and run the installer for OS X
- Download the latest drivers and software for LJ3015 here and install it=

- Open a document to print
- select 'Print' and see, if the printer now is available
- If the printer isn't shown as standard, go to the prefspane=20

- If the printer isn't present, click on the 'Add Printer' button and=20
select the printer in the upcoming list. Mark it and click 'Add'.
- For the IP settings, just select DHCP, and the TCP/IP settings should=20

- If the printer still doesn't show up, you could also try to download=20
the latest version of Gutenprint. GP is specific made for use with HP=20
printers (+ some other brands).

Well, then that's a reason not to use SeaMonkey as a newsreader, since
there's no problem here using MacSOUP, Dave had no problem using MT-NW,
and it even displays properly in Google Groups.

Sorry for my possibly incorrect settings but I did not notice it any errors 
in my received threads.  However, I notice the sender of Erik Richard 
S�rensen displays garbage on the header but the body displays correctly.  I 
believe Erik is working on non-English version.  If my Windows Mail client 
causes your inconvenient, please accept my appologies.  I do not understand 
your suggested method and where to configure it.  I now set to Text and 
Code -> Windows.  Please let me know if there is still any issue.

Of the three of us, only Erik sees it incorrectly.  Neither Davoud nor
Michael Vilain said anything about it, so I assume they had no problems.

MT-NW - such as recognizing non-ASCII characters like scandinavian and=20
German special characters. I have tried both, and none of them are as=20
good as the news client in either Thunderbird or SeaMonkey.

quite a hard work to do. - Fx. changing fonts and font sizes aren't=20
possible to set, so they are good for people with little sight. - And=20
also the threading with all it's colors and other kind of crap is=20

My best guess is that the newsreader Eric is using isn't capable of
dealing with different text encodings. The well-established programs
the rest of us are using have no problem, so I wouldn't worry if I were
you.

I have no firsthand experience with this, but I'm surprised that
MacSOUP, a program written by a programmer in Berlin, Germany, has
problems with German characters.

That, of course, is why we have choices, but no one else in this thread
had to tell the OP to change any settings.

Well, originally MacSOUP was based only on ASCII, so there was trouble=20
with the German and Swedish =E1, but that got better, so there now isn't =

that many problems with =E4=C1, =F3=D3 and =FA=DA, but there are still so=

with the specific danish and Norwegian =E6=C6, =F8=D8 and =E5=C5, so many=

other font, but the last ver. of MacSOUP I tried couldn't use all fonts=20
in my system. - And as you know, some fonts are easier to see than=20
others. - Fx. is an Arial 14p quite a lot easier to see than a=20
Lucidagrande 14p or a Geneva 13p, Helvetica 14p etc.. - The new=20
Microsoft font 'Cambri Sans' is quite much like arial and infact a bit=20
easier to see, if you fx. set this to 13p towards an Arial 14p. - Cambri =

comes with MSOffice 2008 in both a serif and a sans serif version...

What do I mean by "possible"?  I mean exactly that, that it's possible.

you mean by _that_?  I took it to mean that it's not possible, but if

Oh, I see, by not possible you meant that it _is_ possible but with
restrictions.  It was silly of me not to understand that in the first
place.  But, silly me, I had no idea in my previous post that when you
talked what MacSOUP can't do that you aren't talking about the current
version but instead about some previous version.  Yes, I can see why you
wouldn't want to use a program now based on what it was once but is no
longer.

Anything beyond the third level uses the same color as the third level,
so if you set all three levels to black, all additional levels are also
black.  It sounds as though some people need education on the proper use
of quotes, though, since there shouldn't be so many levels maintained.

Erik,

I was using Outlook Express in previous Windows versions, i.e., XP and now 
Windows Vista comes with Windows Mail to replace Outlook Express.  I believe 
I should change to Unicode (UTF-8) rather than a country specific code since 
this is an international news group and Unicode should be the one going 
forward.  I think we must give up individual liking and adopt uniform 
standard, otherwise, the payoff is huge and off focus the subject in this 
group.  I now use Unicode (UTF-8) to transmit this mail and is there any 
issue to you?

they use one or the other font management system like=20
suitCase/Fontfusion or even Linotype Fontexplorer. - Others are also=20
claiming that 'the soup' looses the ability of using especially the=20

font to - mostly - LucidaGrande...

Strange - There still are these "=E5=9C=A8=E9=83=B5=E4=BB=B6" and "=E4=B8=
=AD=E6=92=B0=E5=AF=AB". - I have no=20
explations for this, - maybe only that the oddity happens somewhere on a =

server. Your post comes in as UTF-8/16p and not in my own 14p settings,=20
and SeaMonkey detects it as UTF-8 - set to auto-detect...

"Here"?  I've seen no one here in the comp.sys.mac.* groups saying this.
Or by "here" do you mean in Denmark, and there's a group of people
saying it without ever posting to a relevant newsgroup about it?

Anyway, here you go changing details again.  First you said it wasn't
possible to change fonts, and when I pointed out it _is_ possible, you
said you meant it's possible but doesn't include all the fonts in your
system.  When I checked and found that all the fonts in _my_ system are
available in MacSOUP, then you said you're talking about using font
management programs, whose purpose is to let you use fonts that are
_NOT_ in your system.

Okay, so now I've just used FontExplorer X 1.2.3 and activated five
fonts.  All were then available in MacSOUP 2.8.2.  I expect that now
you're going to say that you were talking about only specific fonts but
had not mentioned that before.

I've previously said I have no experience with Scandanavian characters
(speaking only typographically, of course), but you also said it has
problems with German characters, which is surprising for a German-made
program.

I've used MacSOUP from the very beginning and never had it change from
my font settings (that's plural, by the way, since there are separate
settings for newsgroup lists, subject lists, message text, etc.).  Now,
of course I will never claim that the way something works for me is the
way it works for the rest of the world, but I have never seen anyone
post about such problems to the c.s.m. groups, either.
