Recently it seems that iTunes is losing albums. In the past few days five
albums purchased from the iTunes store no longer appear in my music file.
My normal pattern when purchasing an album is to, after the download is
complete, to copy the selections from that album into a relevant playlist.
Initially the album does indeed appear in the playlist. But later it seems to
have disappeared, both from the playlist and from the music file itself.
Although I have no evidence I am suspicious that the problem results when I
synchronize my iPod touch to my MacBook Pro.
I am running Mac OS X Version 10.5.7 on the MacBook Pro and Version 3.0
(7A341) on the iPod touch (1st generation)
I'm curious as to whether anyone else is experiencing a similar problem, and
if so, have they found a solution.
I have an appointment at the Genius Bar tomorrow to discuss this problem and
will report back to this discussion anything of relevance.

How sure are you that you aren't experiencing some sort of volume
corruption?

When you say "the music file" are you saying that you've used iTunes'
built-in search feature to look and it's not there at all, or that
you've used Finder to look inside the iTunes music folder - the one
indicated in iTunes' prefs, just in case it's not where you think it is
- and it's not to be found at all?

I saw a truck today that had "AAA Batteries / Delivered and Installed" on the
side. My first thought was: That's a really weird business model. How many
inept people have urgent need of skinny little battery cells?

If I search for the album within iTunes it doesn't show, and if I search via
the finder within the "iTunes Music" folder it is no longer there. Prior to
the albums disappearing they could be found by both methods.

I'm doubtful that there is any volume corruption in that there is no behavior
outside of iTunes that to my knowledge has shown any behavioral oddities.
Interestingly, the disappearing albums are just ones that have been purchased
in the last few weeks.
Yesterday I spent some time at the Genius Bar and the genius who worked with
me was literally boggled by what I was able to show (he complimented me on
how well I had documented the problem) and he has submitted a request to
Apple that I be allowed to re-download the five now missing albums. He
suggested that once the albums are re-downloaded that make a duplicate of my
iTunes Music folder so that in case this happens again I have a "before" and
"after" copy of that folder which he felt would both allow me to restore the
missing albums and would perhaps help in trying to understand just why the
albums are being deleted.

An update....
I was finally able to cure the problem first by requesting from Apple that I
be able to redownload the missing music files and by returning my iPod touch
to "factory state" meaning that only the version 3.0 firmware and software
were installed and then synchronizing the music, photos, mail, and calendar.
Interestingly I had to re-download into iTunes the album artwork, even for
albums that weren't affected, and the applications I purchased from the app
store.
But now all appears to be in order!
