Is it possible to move the information in a Mac OS 9 preferences file to
OS X and if so, how?
In this case I'm referring to the App GraphicConverter. I've a
registered copy of it on 9.22 and it's also on OS X. I'm going to
install iCab on OS X and wish it to use the highly modified preferences
that are now on 9.2.2. Thanks

Exactly the same question from me -- with the added condition that I'll
be transferring some OS 9 apps (MS Word, PowerPoint, Now Up to Date and
Contact among others) and their associated files from an old OS 9
machine wanting to run the old apps under Classic on a new OS X 10.3
machine, and also transferring just the data from some other OS 9 apps
on the old OS 9 machine to use with upgraded OS X versions of the same
apps on the new OS X machine.
And, what about all the extensions (especially application-specific
non-Apple extensions) needed by the old OS 9 apps that I transfer over?
How and what do I transfer them?
In general: which of all the mess of stuff in my old OS 9 System Folder
do I transfer over the new machine, and which not? -- and where to I put
all the system folder stuff I transfer?
Thanks much.

It depends on the application. If you're running the same version of
the application on both systems, it *might* use the same format of
preferences file. But it's also possible that it uses different
preference storage depending on what OS release it's running on.

Try copying the preference files to ~/Library/Preferences on the OS X
system and see if it works.

On my installation, they are in the User Library, not the System Library.

Isn't that what I wrote? ~/<directory> means a subdirectory of your
home directory.

Wasn't meaning to dispute you, just making sure the OP knew for sure
which Library.
