Mail, is there a way to search the from field

  • Follow

If I sort a mailbox on the from field, I can find mail from a specific
sender, but if I enter that name in the search field for that mailbox it
isn't found. How can I force search to search that field?

Is this a Lion issue? I'm using Snow Leopard, and when I enter
something in the Search box, I get a set of buttons letting me choose
where to search: Entire Message, From, To, Subject. And Entire Message
appears to search the from field.

Sorry. Yes it is a Lion issue. I don't recall having this problem with
Snow Leopard. You might say that sorting the From column is enough, and
it is if you are just looking through a relatively small mailbox.
However, if you are looking through all your mail folders it is a problem

I don't see that behavior (Mail.app Version 5.2 (1257)) Mac OS X 10.7.3.
When I enter an item in the search field, I get a pop-up showing a
separated list of:
People containing the search item,
Subjects containing the search item,
Mailboxes containing the search item.

I get that as well, but the People list does not include all the people
it should. I will give you an example.

Under a mailbox I call "Mailing Lists and Licenses" I have an entry for
"Datacolor Software Activation." At least that is the way it shows up
in the From list. Searching on "data" in "All" mailboxes only brings up
persons called "Datacolor DCS Support" and "Datacolor Newsletter." I am
trying to find out how to force it to show "Datacolor Software
Activation" as a choice.

I haven't seen that. Have you tried rebuilding the mailbox(es)?

I just did a search in mail same version and OS that you have and a pop
up menu appeared below the search box with a list titled People, and a
list titled Subject, the People list would seem to be what you are
looking for.

No. I just did it. No joy. It must be something else.

I get the people list but it doesn't include "Datacolor Software
Activation."

I'm using Lion and typing a full or partial name in Mail's search field
works fine here. It starts sorting the list immediately as I type, and
even lets me choose from matching people. subjects, and mailboxes in the
Search menu:

<http://jollyroger.kicks-ass.org/mail/search.png>

Obviously, if you are searching for a person, what you have in your
address book for that person will need to match the text you are typing
to find them.

If you want help with this, I think you'll need to give us more
information about the particular things you are typing and what shows up
in the Search menu while you type them.

Sounds a little bit like the issue I had sometime ago.
Mail would auto-complete an address that was NOT in my address book,
but would not find it in search.

If you search by the person's name, then it should find them either way,
assuming you have their name correctly entered into Address Book.

I don't understand. If I sort on the "from" field with the parent
"Inbox" selected, then type in a piece of the name in the search field
it provides a subset of the "from" users just fine.

I said "was NOT in my address book"

I'm sticking with Snow Leopard and my advice has always been to stay a
version behind if you can. Let others deal with new badly thought out
design and bugs.

That's certainly a good strategy for some people and in some situations.

Oh sorry I hadn't read that all the way through. The issue you mention

And totally workable for users as Apple and third party support
continues for at least the previous version of OSX, with few exceptions.
Those exceptions would be brand new software built for the latest OS
only, and that's breaking my one version behind rule anyway :-)

It's important to remember the latest and greatest aint always so great
right off the bat. Also staying one version behind can lead to cost
savings if you're thrifty, as the previous version is often heavily
discounted new or secondhand. Not to mention avoiding the downtime and
losses from having to deal with buggy new software.

And they're already promising "Mountain Lion"
with "all-new features inspired by iPad."

There's some of it here:

<http://mashable.com/2012/02/16/apple-mountain-lion-mac-osx/>

But note that there are still a lot of folks staying with Snow Leopard,
for the moment at least:

"OS 10.7, or Lion, launched in July 2011; 30% of Mac users now have it
installed. (Another 50% of us still favor Snow Leopard)."

Nowadays about the only thing I do rush to update are multiplayer games
and software that's already buggy (or buggy ebough for me to care and a
fix is promised in the update), excepting some software I beta test.
Everything else can wait till I need a feature, something breaks due to
other updates, or there's a sale on a new version and it's nothing
critical.
