Move Thunderbird to new laptop

  • Follow

I got a new MacBook Pro to replace my three-year old one. I am going
nuts trying to move my Thunderbird files/old emails/address book to the
new computer. So far either the new Thunderbird crashes or doesn't
recognize the mail folder I put in its Profile folder. I've tried
several variations on moving the files, but it's still not working. Can
anyone point me to a set of instructions to do this? Thanks.

Have you tried the Migration Assistant.app found in your Utilities
folder?

Yes, it moved the application, but not the associated mail files and
folders. Now I have to do it manually.

Lou-

I thought you could use Migration Assistant to move an entire User to a
new machine. That should get all files, folders and preferences.

I have used the automatic migration routine several times. When
starting up a new Mac, the option should be presented before you
establish a user account.

It was necessary to start up the old machine in FireWire Disk mode, and
connect the two via FireWire cable. This might not be possible with new
machines that have no FireWire connector, but there should be something
like an Ethernet alternative.

I only migrated the applications. That seemed to migrate some files in
Library, but not all. I'll add another user account and try to migrate
everything to that one.

Thanks.

I wouldn't add another account- that'll get way confusing- unless you
have virtually nothing in the existing account, and are prepared to
ditch it entirely.

Migration Assistant was really designed to get those personal files - as
well as registations, etc.- into your new setup. Applications can
usually be installed afresh, sometimes to good effect if there's
something wonky on the old setup.

Anyway, if after the new Migration, I believe I can walk you through it
if it doesn't take the easy way.

OK. Good advice. I'll give it a shot. Thanks.
