Opera on winxp failed to start because libcurl.dll was not found

  • Follow

I don't see this error related to Opera freeware on XP so may I ask what
the solution to this message might be.

I've repeatedly uninstalled and reinstalled the freeware Opera web browser,
which works, albeit very slowly, and always with the startup error:

Opera.exe - Unable to Locate Component
This application has failed to start because libcurl.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

I've installed opera into c:\proggies\browsers\opera but everything else is
standard about my installation and windows xp.

Does anyone know what this libcurl.dll error is telling me to resolve?
When I search for libcurl.dll on my WinXP SP2 system, it comes up found in
c:\proggies\word processors\openoffice\program\libcurl.dll

I can workaround the problem by copying the libcurl.dll from Sun OpenOffice
freeware into c:\proggies\browsers\opera\program\libcurl.dll but I really
don't understand the error message.

Help! I hate it when I'm clueless.

What is libcurl.dll and why is Opera missing it yet Opera doesn't install
it yet it is only found in the OpenOffice freeware program directory?

Opera has no native dependency upon libcurl.dll, you must have done
something in the past to create such a dependency.

libcurl.dll is part of cURL <http://curl.haxx.se> W32 distribution.

So you have some modified Opera .INI file(s) that reference cURL.

Search in Toolbar and Menu .INIs for 'Execute program' entries which
include the reference(s) to cURL.

That might explain your cross-posting to a Mac group
