Parallels and Internet Sharing

After buying a repair manual for a Tel/Fax machine in form of a .pdf
file, Preview showed all pages empty, Reader and Acrobat (I tried all
version from 6-Cool connect to a plugin website without specifying the
needed plugin.
The seller does not support Mac, sent some WIN plug-ins and thought
that the file contains Asian characters. They suggested to go to a
friend with a PC. Well I have Parallels installed, a good and my only
reason to connect to the net, but I can't do it.
I have 10.4.8 and Parallels Desktop V2.5, Build 3106. The Config
Manager leaves the Network Adaptor settings: Bridged Ethernet and
Shared Networking grey. The Tools are all installed and everything else
is working. The FAQ on their support site mention that Host-only
Networking will work, if
on the Mac side Internet Sharing and Web Sharing is turned on. I even
turned off the Firewall altogether. After a restart it still did not
work. The FAQ did not mention settings on the VM-side (XP) and I have
been fiddling for hours and nothing works.
I have a dial-up setup, the only connection I can get where I live, an
ISDN terminal that is connected via USB.
I also tried to connect the USB port directly to the VM, but it answers
that the device is busy. It is not and it was also reset.
I would appreciate any and all ideas. Perhaps my best bet is to go to a
friend with a PC...
