play DVD-Audio discs?

Is there any way to play DVD-Audio discs (play, not rip) in osx? A
google search didn't lead to anything useful. Seems strange to me that
authoring a DVD-Audio is easy while playing one back is apparently
impossible. Can that really be true?

I never really played with that "format" but I always assumed the audio
files were just normal VOB files with only black for the video portion,
and that you could play through them with a regular menu; or a "play
all" script, I guess. What happens when you put such a disc in the
computer?

Most DVD-Audios are really just DVD-Videos with little moving images and
lots of high quality music. To tell the truth, DVD-As also have audio
encoded in a peculiar format called Advanced Resolution, which is
supposed to be the standard to play them with DVD-equipped HI-FI systems
(ie. machines with no video capability).
The video tracks are not strictly required by the DVD-A format, so there
is the possibility that you have a DVD-A with *only* Advanced Resolution
audio tracks, but in practice I think that all of them have video tracks
too, although sometimes only the Advanced Resolution tracks have the
highest quality (96 KHz and 24 bit).

All of that said, you should be able to play them simply with DVD
Player. Keep in mind that the real power of DVD-Audios lies in surround
audio, so unless your Mac is equipped with a surround sound card, or a
sound card with digital output (and you have a surround system with
digital input), you will not really enjoy them much more than a CD.
I personally listen to DVD-Audio on my little home theater system, and
if they have been mixed decently they are great. Most older productions
remastered on DVD-Audio won't be THAT great, but newer ones are pretty
cool, as they are mixed with surround in mind.

Just curious, how is authoring a DVD-Audio easy? What application allows
to do it easily? I record music for fun, and I wouldn't mind giving it a
try if the software weren't expensive.

Thank you

Toast 7 has the capability; they call it a "Music DVD."

It's not cheap-cheap, but it's a good product.

There seems to be some confusion here. A DVD-Audio does not have video
on it, will not play in most video dvd players and will not play in DVD
Player.app.

There are also DVD-Video discs which have primarily audio content, but
but this is something else entirely, and not what I'm asking about.

It's easy to tell the difference if you look at the file system on the
dvd. DVD-Audio has files only in the AUDIO_TS folder, DVD-Video has
files only in the VIDEO_TS folder.

Nope.

That's just one option, the one I have least interest it. They can
also be used simply for music that's too long to fit one one cd, or for
ordinary 2-channel stereo in higher resolution than 44.1/16.

No, DVD-Audio is not like that. It has no data at all in the VIDEO_TS
folder and afaik cannot be played with DVD Player.app or in an ordinary
video dvd player.

The disc mounts as a udf volume with data in the AUDIO_TS folder, just
as it should.

I guess I have a pretty good desktop player, then.

It's not a matter of "good": some home dvd players can play DVD-Audio;
most, including some excellent video players, don't.

What player is it? Have you ever actually used it for DVD-Audio? In
your earlier post you didn't seem to understand the difference between
-Audio and -Video.

Hei...

You can do this in iTunes, if the audio DVD is made as mp3-DVD in Toast=20
or equivallent burner program. - Some of the newer stand-alone DVD=20
players are also audio-DVD compatible. - I hvae bought one myself.
Cheers, Erik Richard

<sigh> Discs of this kind are not DVD-Audio.

Apparently there is no way to play DVD-Audio in osx.

It seems like a bit of overkill, but you can play DVD-Audio in Jam (as
well as create them there).
