I'm frustrated. I went to C-Span's convention site to check out some of
the speaches I wanted to see. They're xxx.rm files.
When I click on one, up comes Quicktime Player, which promptly declares
"unsupported transport" and won't play the file.
So, I "View Source" on the page, find & copy the url for the .rm file,
open RealPlayer, select play location and paste in the url. Works
fine.
In the Finder, I do a get info on an xxx.rm set RealPlayer to open it,
and "change all".
I quit Safari, restart it, and navigate back to the website.
Still, when I click on the file I want, Quicktime comes up and fails to
play it.
How do I fix that -- That is, how do I get real player to run instead of
quicktime when I click on an appropriate link?
Why isn't there a mime.types/mailcap file I can edit to make things work
like I want?

System Preferences > QuickTime > Plug-In > MIME settings .
Uncheck the ones you don't want the QuickTime Plug-In to process.

How about a Get Info on a .rm file, change the "open with" from QT to
realplayer and then hit the "change all." Seems to work for everything
- not just media files.

Change it in helper apps (either Explorer prefs or DefaultApp).

After doing that, also choose Check Media Types from RealPlayer's Help
menu, and be sure RealPlayer is set to handle rtsp protocol links. You
might uncheck and recheck the rtsp checkbox to force RealPlayer to
re-save its media type settings.

Um, as you can see, I did that Interestingly, it didn't fix the
problem. Perhaps that's why I asked.
Besides, that only works for files one has a copy of -- or, I suppose I
can 'touch' a file with the appropriate type and then getInfo, etc, but
it really seems the hard way around, when an editor works just fine.
However, wishing it was different is hardly worth the effort. I just
wish it worked. I'll see if the system preferences approach works.
thanks anyway.

That was a good idea, it seems -- RealOnePlayer said there were several
misconfigured types, which I had it fix...
but when I navigated back to the page & clicked on a link, it still
brought up QT... which failed, as usual.
Maybe I should try Mozilla

Can you provide a link that isn't working for you so we can try it? I
just went to the C-SPAN convention page and clicked on the Kerry link.
Safari opened RealOnePlayer and it started playing the video after a
short delay.

AHA! When I went to do that, I eventually found the url (it was an
rtsp:// hidden behind a javascript function call) and then I remembered
RCDefaultApp pref pane -- when I checked it, I found rtsp: was set to
QT. I changed it to RealOnePlayer and that solved it.
I recognize that's what Greg Robbins suggested and I tried it through
the Check Media Types in the Help menu -- but somehow I didn't get it
right the first time.
Now it's working.
Thanks for your help!
