Safari: show URL when mouse moves over a link?

  • Follow

I've been using Firefox for a while, but I thought I'd give the new
Safari a try. Now, is there a Safari setting so that it shows the
target URL when I move the mouse pointer over a link? Firefox does
that, and I got used to it. Before I click a link I want to know what
(kind of) address is behind it, if it's a PDF, does it point to an
obscure URL, etc.

Safari should show me that target URL before I click the link. Is
there a setting to enable that?

Thanks!
Markus

If you've selected "Sow Status Bar" from the View menu, you can see the
target URL in the status bar at the bottom of the page.

you see.

It's shown in the status bar.

For those of us who don't like status bars taking up valuable space,
it's possible to show it in a tooltip too, but it's a hidden preference
that's easiest to turn on with a system tweaking app like Deeper:

Is there a way to have "Show Status Bar" selected as the default choice?
I can't find it in the Preferences.

Just turn it on; the setting will persist.

Yes. View => Show Status Bar, I believe.

Safari does so by default, but shows it in the Status Bar, which is off
by default... ;)

FWIW, there is absolutely no way to be sure what file type a URL points
to by looking at the URL. It is at best relatively common that a file
that ends in ".pdf" points to a PDF file. Bu it might just as well point
to something entirely different, and something entirely different than
".pdf" may just as well point to a PDF file.

File name extensions have (exept by convention) no real meaning on the
Web.

Or cmd-/ (slash) should you want to toggle back and forth.

Just as an added note, Safari has four such menu bars:

   View >> Show Bookmarks Bar
   View >> Show Status Bar
   View >> Show Tab Bar
   View >> Show Toolbar

which (so far I know?) you can only toggle on or off individually.

Adobe Acrobat has a bunch of similar menu bars and toolbars -- and a
single button at the bottom of each document window which toggles off
all the currently showing bars, then toggles them back on in case you
want to view a document without all this overlying clutter.

Adobe Acrobat has a ton of (very useful) palettes and toolbars which you
can open and position around your screen. Hitting Tab toggles them all
off, then back on, so you can look at the full image that's behind all
this clutter (and, all the tools continue working while they're hidden,
and can be used if you know their individual key commands).

All they ought to be looking at is OS X's own window manager, which has
an optional button for toggling toolbars that Safari inexplicably leaves
out...

From the Safari "View" menu select "Show Status Bar" and there will be a bar
along the bottom of the window that will show the complete URL for a link.
