Snow Leopard and iTunes Update

  • Follow

I have foolishly (it appears) downloaded the latest version of iTunes
onto my Mac, running 10.6.8 which I think was Snow Leopard.

However, now the iTunes does not recognize my iPod. (Not the Touch -
the older style.) I am assuming that Mac has abandoned the Snow Leopard
support with this new iTunes?

Can someone tell me how to replace the newer iTunes with the previous
version (I now have V 10.6 (40) on my Mac and it does not work with the
iPod.)

Thanks,

S.

restore from a backup. if you use time machine it's very easy.

I am SO glad my Luddite gene has kept me from doing the same, because my
iPod is far from new!

My iPod classic and clip style iPod shuffle continue to work fine with
OS X 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.6 (40). Perhaps something went wrong
upgrading? So far as I know iTunes continues to support the entire range
of iPods, though it's been years since I tried a firewire model.

Anyway - I'd try restalling iTunes using the standalone installer. Or
restore using a backup.

iTunes 10.6 officially supports Mac OS X 10.5.8 and later (Leopard), so
Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) is fine.

If your iPod is not being recognised, I'd be inclined to suspect
something is messed up with your computer, iPod or the dock cable,
rather than iTunes having deliberately dropped support for old devices.

This triggered me to get around to reconnecting my old iPod Photo and
updating it with my current iTunes library. I'm running iTunes 10.6 on
Mac OS X 10.6.8. The iPod Photo is a late 2004 model, effectively a 4th
gen iPod with the addition of a colour display.

iTunes 10.6 recognises my iPod and is able to sync with it, with either
USB or Firewire.

Exactly which iPod model do you have? If in doubt, go into Settings >
About on the iPod and report back with what it says for Model number.

The manufacture date can also be used to work out the generation, and
that can be derived from the serial number. Look at the S/N field on the
About screen. The third character in the serial number is the last digit
of the year of manufacture, and the next two digits are the week of the
year.

If iTunes is not showing the iPod under the DEVICES heading, is there
any other evidence the iPod is connected?

1. Does the iPod show the "do not disconnect" screen?
2. Does the icon for the iPod appear in Finder as a mounted volume?
3. Does System Profiler's USB category show the iPod on the USB bus?

Not particularly easy. You would need to move the iTunes application and
its associated kernel extensions to trash, install the older version,
restart, and manually restore and rename the old version of the iTunes
library file from the folder in which the new version of iTunes placed
it.

You also need a copy of the installer for the previous version. I doubt
that you will be able to download it from Apple, if you didn't keep a
copy of it previously.

The other option is to restore the relevant pieces from your most recent
backup prior to installing iTunes 10.6.
