FireWire to optical audio out

  • Follow

I'm looking for a simple external device that will give me optical audio
out of my 3.06 GHz iMac running 10.6.5. Something like this USB device:

....but with a FireWire interface if possible. The only FireWire devices
I can find are multi-channel and feature-heavy for the audio pro, with
prices to match. Way overkill for me. Thanks.

Something like this?

Most, if not all, current models of Macs already have optical in and out
build in.

The problem is, I'd like to use both the internal speakers and optical
out at the same time. Plugging something in to the built-in optical out
trips a mechanical switch that shuts off the internal speakers. That's
why I'm looking for a FireWire device that will give me optical out.
I'll settle for USB if no FW devices are available.

I've been using a Turtle Beach Audio Advantage for some time with a mini
that has no optical audio out. Works fine.

It may not be any help, but if you've got coreaudio installed
(comes/came with Pro Tools) that has a checkbox in the prefs that allows
you to mirror both outputs.

It doesn't work with Pro Tools but if I use, for example, Amadeus Pro it
will mirror my sp/dif output to the normal one - which saves a lot of
cable swapping.

That doesn't help me, though. My iMac has its line level out and its
optical out in the same jack. Plugging anything into the jack shuts off
the internal speakers. It's a mechanical switch, which is why there is
no software fix.
