Internal modem problems in OS9.2.2 on 600Mhz Imac

  • Follow

I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue but I use Mac OS
9.2.2 on a 600 Mhz Imac with an internal Apple modem. The modem is
not responding and doesn't even show up in an Apple hardware
test....."no device found" but the modem is there.

As soon as I open "system profile" in the Apple System Profiler, it
reads "Modem found, no addtional information available" but very
quickly that changes to nothing but the word "modem." No modem
appears in "devices and volumes" but I'm not sure it would be there
anyway.

I found this but it hasn't helped:

Remote Access: Modem Not Responding Alert
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30893

After doing a clean system reinstall, it still doesn't work. I've run
Tech Tool Pro for OS9 and Disk Warrior and everything else I can
think of, but, alas, still no working modem. It used to work fine
but then I quit using it for awhile when I tried Jfax but I need it
again in order to send faxes via FAXstf 6. I have no idea what
prompted it to let me down unless it got jealous of JFax. I have
begged forgiveness. Still no modem.

I haven't found anything in software updates that seems applicable.
Firmware is up to date and so is all automatic software updates for
OS 9.2.2 except for Ipod software because I don't have one......yet.
Everything else on my mac works flawlessly.

I have moved the modem preferences to the desktop, restarted, and
reset the PRAM and then moved the modem preferences back into the
sytem folder where they belong.

I have rebuilt the desk top countless times.

In the control panel, I see Apple Internal 56k (v90). Sound is :"on"
and dialing is set to "tone."

In the FAXstf Preferences, I selected Apple Internal 56K modem but
AT&K4&D2VE appears in the block below "send" and "receive"
and both of them are set at 14400bps. The "test" block is faded so
the modem cannot be tested.

Since I use cable modem, I have done nothing to remote access but
look at it and wonder if I'm missing something.

And there is a good, working, tested and re-tested phone line plugged
in.

What's a fellow to do but ask for help and be thankful for any that
comes my way.

Have you tried booting up with extensions off, just to see if the Mac
finds it then? Have you tried booting with just the base OS 9 extension
set?

My modem did that once with my iMac, but that's because the logic board
somehow got damaged(hopefully that's not that case for you). It was a lot
like your problem in that everything else, but the modem, worked fine...

Try shutting down the iMac then pull the AC power plug, leave it out for
say 10 seconds then plug it back in, start the computer and check the
modem. I have seen various problems with iMacs failing to power up some
internal devices. I haven't seen it with the modem as I don't use it
but the HD, CD and Ethernet I've seen problems with. Restarting nor
shutdown alone will solve the problem as the power manager is still
running. Pulling the plug resets the power manager.
