PowerBook G4: 1.67 GHz/512 MB or 1.50 GHz/1 GB???
For basically the same expenditure, which PowerBook G4 15" SuperDrive
configuration will provide the best performance, a 1.67 GHz w/ standard
512 MB RAM or a 1.50 GHz upgraded to 1 GB RAM? If you had to decide,
if the best-of-both-worlds 1.67 GHz plus 1 GB RAM config were not an
option, which would you choose and why?

Hi. I cannot find the detailed specifications on the USB speed on my
PowerBook G4 1 Ghz (15") that I bought a year ago. I checked its manual
and Apple's Web site. I think the information on the Web site is for
the newer PowerBook G4s.
Does anyone know?
Thank you in advance. :)

Hi. I just took delivery of a new Apple Powerbook G4 1.67GHz 15". I
bought it from the Apple Store Online. When the display is closed, the
left front corner of the lid is slightly higher than the right. If you
put your finger on the left corner and press down, you can wiggle the
lid and make the corners move up and down. The difference between
corners at rest is about 1mm. The wiggling is about 1mm up and down.
Is this normal, or a fit and finish issue? Is the lid warped? Should I
send it back?

...Mac OS X 10.5/Leopard on an old PowerBook (PPC) G4 1 Ghz with 512 MB of RAM & 60 GB HDD?
I have an old PowerBook G4 (PPC) with 1 Ghz CPU speed, 512 MB of RAM,
and 60 GB of HDD. If I were to do a fresh clean install of Mac OS X
10.5/Leopard on it (still have 10.2.8 on it and seems fine, just old),
then how will it perform? Will it be slower? Or should I just wait until
I get a new Apple notebook/laptop (e.g., MacBook)?
I am a heavy user who likes to run Fink stuff for X11, play hungry power
games (e.g., MacMAME, Quake 3 Arena and its mods)
Thank you in advance.

Forget Mandrake 9.1 for powerpc:
The installer is seriously buggy. It wouldn't read the A key on my
G4 powerbook nor did it have support for my video card. It couldn't
even read the disk on my powermac G4. There are numerous bugs in the
software and problems with partitioning. Since it is what I had first,
I tried to install it a score of times before my list of workarounds
ended up in a dead end with no video card support on the powerbook.
Gentoo is a thing of beauty. Unfortunately, it doesn't understand the

having spent the day failing to get Mandrake 9.1 onto my G4, I am ready
to accept your first proposition!! So let me ask you a couple of
questions about your second, as YDL2.2 and 2.3 were non-starters on an

I'm new to the apple. I've been using a pc all my life. I need to
pickup a apple soon and I wanted to find out the differences between
those two models. And I mean the newest models. I hear even the
ibook now has 54g as standard.
Its a price difference of about $500. Both have the same screen. One
has a better video card (both models seems to have low end cards
considering my laptop that I have to use now has a Gforce 5750
w/128mb). I'll be using it as a laptop. No hooking up to a larger
screen. Would it be worth moving up to a $1500 laptop vs the $1k
ibook? I ...RAM for PowerBook G4
I never upgraded to 1Gb because I would have had to replace 2-256Mb
chips with 2-512Mb chips. Now, I have read, there are 1Gb chips out.
Does anybody know if a PowerBook will recognize them? I might be
willing to spend the money on 2-1Gb chips, or even just put in one and
keep the other 256Mb chip, if that is possible.
If the PowerBook can use them, does anybody know a source, part number,
price, whatever? Is it posssible just to use one?

I have a question regarding lexical analysis. I recently came across a
bug in our lexical analyser in phc (www.phpcompiler.org), that I am
unsure how to solve. This is the problem: our current definition for
integer constant looks something like
In particular, note that it does not allow for an (optional) "+" or "-"
at the start of the integer. This means that the strings "1 - 1", "1
-1" and "1-1" all generate the same sequence of three tokens INT(1),
OP(-), INT(1), for which the syntax analyser generates the subtr...PowerBook G4 DVI mboard -> PowerBook G4 Gigabit?
