[OT] Displaying Prices on Websites

  • Follow

I've noted, and with great frustration, that with a great many websites where
one can purchase something the price itself is not revealed until you
actually begin the process of placing an order. I'll be frank and state that
I am truly hesitant to order from any company which does this. I'll
complement Apple in that there website is such that the price of an item is
readily available without one having to go through the motions of placing an
order.

So, am I just being a grump or do others feel as I do? :-)

I get annoyed when they won't tell you the _shipping_ costs until you do
a final checkout, though. I won't give a credit card number out until I
know how much I'm going to be charged.

I've never seen a site that has stuff I'm interested in where the prices
aren't listed, though. Ferchrisake, that's why we shop online -- to
compare prices. What are you purchasing?

The site that prompted my posting was <http://www.endnote.com/> where one can
purchase the software package Endnote. Unless I'm mistaken one has to
initiate the ordering process just to see the price.

You're mistaken. OTOH, I've occasionally seen items at Amazon where the
prices aren't revealed until you add them to the cart.

Where in the website I mentioned can I see the prices without initiating an
order? I'm curious and would like to know!

I'm not sure how you can miss seeing the prices on the left.

Here: (I'd hardly consider this "initiating an order.")

I clicked on Purchase, then on the link for US.

The "purchase" page links to it: click "American Express [...]".

To me the fact that you have to identify your method of payment just to see
the price is in itself irritating!

Mike,

Interestingly part of the quoting of my earlier posting has appeared as the
above gobbledygook. The question now is what is responsible for the error, my
newsreader or yours or something amiss in the servers in between.

Jim

The link text is just badly phrased. The two links lead to two different web
stores. The first is Endnote's own web store, which only accepts AmEx, Visa,
and MC. The second is Digital River, which accepts other payment methods.

A lot of publishers/manufacturers avoid posting prices outside their web store
when the product is also available through distributors or third-party web
stores.

That's the URL as I copied an pasted it, now with quoting characters and
line break inserted.
