Can't mount my MacOS X 10.3.9 shares from Windows 2000. It worked when I was running MacOS X 10.2.8.

  • Follow

I just recently migrated from a beige Power Macintosh G3 running
MacOS X 10.2.8, to a Blue&White Power Macintosh G3 running MacOS X
10.3.9. Now,my wife's Windows 2000 machine is no longer able to access
volumes that my Macintosh tries to share via Samba.

In my smb.conf file, I have the following shares:

    [homes]
       comment = User Home Directories
       browseable = yes
       read only = no
       create mode = 0750

    [ZZZZZZZZ]
       path = /
       read only = no
       valid users = BBBBB,SSSSSSS

Where SSSSSSS is the username that my wife's machine is trying to login as to access these shares.

There's a batch file on the Windows machine that goes like this:

    net use /USER:SSSSSSS m: \\192.168.1.200\ZZZZZZZZ PASSWORD /persistent:no
    net use /USER:SSSSSSS s: \\192.168.1.200\Homes PASSWORD /persistent:no

This worked just fine when I was running MacOS X 10.2.8.

Now, under MacOS X 10.3.9, when I run this batch on the Windows
system, I get this:

    System error 1326 has occurred.
Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

    System error 1326 has occurred.
Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

Under MacOS X 10.2.8, there was an option in the Accounts item under
System Preferences to specify whether a particular account was allowed
to log in from a Windows system. I had to enable that in order to allow
an account to be used to mount Macintosh shares from my wife's Windows
machine.

I cannot find any similar option under MacOS X 10.3.9. Is it hiding
somewhere that I haven't thought to look, or is there something

Ok but can you log in manually from the Windows box?

The "Enable Accounts" button to which you refer has been moved to the
System Preferences > Sharing panel, and appears only when "Windows
Sharing" is highlighted and checked / enabled in the services list.

If you mean being able to telnet in and log into a command line, yes,
that works, but that's not really related.

If you mean being able, in any way, to mount or access shared volumes,
no, not that I've been able to find.

I don't see it. I'm looking at the Sharing panel right now. Windows
sharing is enabled, and it's highlighted. There's a field above to edit
the name of my computer There's some text at the right that says
"Windows Sharing On", with a "Stop" button below it, and below that, an
excessively-detailed explanation on how the "Stop" button will stop
Windows lusers from being able to access my system. Below the list of
services, is a blurb saying "Windows users can access your computer at
\\bob\bob" which is not really the correct workgroup/address to which I
thought I was sharing, but much to my amazement, appears to work (by
work", I mean that attempts from the Windows system to access my
computer by that name produce the same error described above, rather
than giving an error to the effect that there's no server at that
address).

I'll be damned if I know what happened there. That certainly wasn't
how I intended it to be formatted.

Hmm.. Well I don't have a 10.3 system here, but that's where it is in
10.4, so I assumed they had moved it in 10.3. Maybe it's somewhere else
in 10.3 then...

One thing you might try is downloading SharePoints and seeing if you
can manually adjust Windows sharing that way:

FWIW I've seen that happening when telnet terminal settings have got
messed up.

What it actually sad was:
