Connecting Wireless Printer To Air

  • Follow

A friend of mine bought a Brother wireless 11" x 17" scanner/printer to go with her
Mac Air laptop. She installed the software. It instructed her to go to her router
(a new Belkin "N" speed) and push some kind of Setup button on the top front (for
automatic setup)...which she did. It didn't work. In fact, the internet quit
working on her Air.

I stopped over to help. First, I went into the router back office and disabled WAP
encryption. Now, the internet is working again on her laptop.

Then, we reinstalled the Brother software, entered the IP address that the printer
showed on it's LCD Menu, but it couldn't find the printer. The wireless printer has
a menu function to search for the nearest computer and connect to it. We tried that,
and it said it had successfully found the computer and connected, but it still doesn't
work. The laptop itself does not see the printer under Settings/Printer. It says to
check the settings.

When we connected using a USB cable, it finds the printer, and it prints normally.

We tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Brother software, but no change.

Next time, I'm going to check if the router is set for "N" only. If so, I'll set it
to see "G" as well. That could be the problem.

If this doesn't work, does anyone have any more suggestions?

Thanks!
Scott

Could the set-up stuff assume a Windows system of some sort?
What are the system requirements for the Belkin? Same thing
for the scanner/printer?

Good luck.

Could be.

Check the requirements for the router? Does it have WEP/WPA?
I'd guess the auto-setup functionality is limited to Windows XP. I
haven't seen much acceptance by manufacturers for Vista, but
that could be there.

Good luck.

I hope you're aware of the security, legal, and other ramifications of
doing this!
