in simulator only to test networking in the app

(I'm short on ipads at the moment here, one is still in transit, hence
the temp surrogate fallback)

that's an obvious one

but you understand there are other networking users besides the
simulator on a desktop?

turn it back on when you are done testing.

there's also a system preference that lets you throttle the network
speed so the simulator simulates an actual 2g/3g connection (or however
fast you want it to be).

I do not see that in ios simulator 5.1 (272.21)

is that something somewhere in lion settings? (could not find that in
network settings for the 10.7.3 host either)

My copy was installed as part of Xcode and is an OS X prefpane called
Network Link Conditioner. I'm not certain if it gets installed by the
app store version of Xcode, or if you need to go to Xcode > Open
Developer Tool > More... to download them separately.
