Google is your friend. that's where _I_ found the method I used (once) to get
a certain specific UTube thingie. As I was only interested in getting that
one video, I can't recall the method. But it took me 30 seconds to find it,
so I'm sure that you can, too.

You could start by searching the web. I'll leave the specific details of
how to do that as an exercise.

What the others here have suggested is a good start (i.e., google
searching is a skill all should develop :-)

However, as I recently went through this same question, I suggest
that you check out:

http://www.perian.org/#watch

Youtube videos tend to be in Flash Video file format. The above
site shows you one way to get them downloaded using Safari.

Perian is an add on component to Quicktime that will let you view
..flv (flash video) files.

No, I heard that's something else.

Bill Curtis? Not sure about him; but I am pretty sure it was in Lock
Ness, Scotland - not Ireland.

There are on-line tools that work for any computer, but TubeTV works
better - Google it.

Tsk tsk. Scotland has Lochs not Locks, although the prononciation is the
same. Perhaps a typo? There are, I think, only two lakes in Scotland, one
being the Lake of Menteith where Mary queen of Scots was incarcerated for a
time but I can't, off hand, remember the name of the other.

Given that you are so stupid that you cannot even spell simple words,
such as "you"; one would have to assume that you wouldn't be intelligent
enough to understand any instructions that any of us might try to give
you. No point in wasting our time or effort.

I was thinking that whilst out for a spin on the bike this morning, and I
knew someone would take me to account for it! The "ch" in loch is much more
like the gutteral sound in the German "Ach". That's the nearest I can think
of it.

VLC plays .flv format too

I had a need to see a .flv file and Perian was the first tool I
came across. That is the only reason I knew about it. I have
Flip4Mac to view .wmv files and like Perian, it also uses
Quicktime. Also the Perian website had some nice video tutorials
on how to get files off of YouTube.

Can you think of anything that might make VLC a more useful tool
over Perian? No flame intended, I'm just interested in some opinions.

VLC is a fully-blown app that can play almost any kind of video.
separate from QT, and transcode if you want to other formats.

Perian is a plug-in that enables QT-based players to play a host of
different formats.

You need both.

VLC gives very good control in playing, such as easy aspect ratio,
audio track, and subtitle selection. It can also play more audio
formats than QuickTime.
QuickTime Pro, with Perian and Flip4Mac,, takes a bit more work to
change settings, but you can save the file with new settings for future
playing.
MPEG Streamclip lets you change audio formats without re-encoding the video.

The other "must have" tool if you've got videos you want to keep and
use with Apple TV/iTunes/etc, is MetaX. It can create/edit chapter
marks, and a whole load of meta data fields, all without re-encoding
the video. It only works on MPEG videos though.

Cheers,

Chris
