I purchased a Canon Pixma MX860 Multifunction Printer (big mistake!);
installed it and its software on my MacBook running 10.4.11; and set it
up to be connected wirelessly to our household LAN.
It now works, prints OK, and other OS 10.4 and 10.5 laptops in the house
all seem to see it with no further installs of software on them (I
assume this mysterious Bonjour entity plays some role here?).
But, there is now an icon in my menu bar with menu selections which turn
on and off something called "Canon IJ Network Scan Utility". Anyone
really know how to get rid of this damn icon?
[Preliminary searches in my libraries and the Canon manual have been
unavailing thus far. I'm not even really sure whether the function of
this "Canon IJ Network Scan Utility" is to scan the _network_ looking
for ??? or is to enable the _scanner_ features of the MX860 over the
network.]

That's for the scanner feature of your MP860.

Much rather have separate scanner and laser printer: two individually
understandable, manageable, and upgradable units, with much less
complexity in total. Maybe a bit more initial acquisition cost; likely
much less operating cost, much less frequent reloading of supplies, and
just much less hassle.

The tradeoffs also include less countertop real-estate and fewer
electrical outlets required for the MFP. This is from someone with two
standalone flatbed scanners, a networked laser printer, and an Epson
inkjet in addition to my Canon MFP. The flatbeds are rarely used and
spend most of their time on a closet shelf. Similarly, the laser
printer has been placed in a different room -- actually, on a
roll-around table in the family room closet with an Ethernet drop, just
to keep it out of the way (and it is turned off most of the time due to
the power it draws, even while sitting idle).

Try holding down the Command key, and dragging the icon out of the menu
bar.

Too bad you don't like yours. I love mine. Easy to setup with my
MacBook (now running 10.6.2), prints wirelessly just fine with all the
Apple laptops in the house as well as an old Dell running XP
Professional and a couple of desktop Macs connected via USB.

It's just a grayed-out icon. Don't see what the big deal is.

That doesn't work. I tried that a long time ago in an attempt to position
it in my menu bar. It's pretty well locked in there.

I have also connected wirelessly with my Ubuntu linux laptops too. The
new ASUS EeePC 1005HA that Santa brought for my 10 year old with Ubuntu
was already configured to work the the Canon PIXMA MP620. Go figure.

Neither Canaon nor Apple nor anyone should fuck with your computer, is
the big deal.
It's probably a startup item. He can delete it from his Accounts
settings.

Thanks - but, went back to the Finder and tried all four combinations
of Cmd or Ctrl plus Left or Right Click on this icon, and none of them
dragged it out. (This is in 10.4.11.)

Did you see my post recommending you rip the server software out? Look
back in Google groups for it. That may be your only option if Canon is
putting the icon in the menu bar. Find the process that's doing it and
kill it.

OK. The small deal on the menu bar icon is just the space it takes up,
for a function I don't use. Have a couple of other utilities I do use
(XMenu, Now Contact/QuickContact, etc) that have useful menu bar icons,
so I'm jealous of that space.
Re the printer itself: seems to be a decent printer, a bit slow to
respond, indeed connects widely all by itself. But, 40 or 50 front
panel buttons; 5 ink cartridges; 8 or 9 doors and hatches; inadequate
paper tray; no envelope printing function; installs a bunch of software
all over your system (and doesn't give you a report on what's been
installed); 90 page manual (which still doesn't really tell you all
that's going on); and it's an inkjet: $40 retail for the color tanks,
$15 for the B&W.
For those who like it, and like multifunction units, it's fine, and low
cost (initially, anyway). I'll go back to separately optimized scanner
and laser printer with 3 buttons, 2 doors or hatches, and one high
capacity toner cartridge.

On a laptop an unwanted menu icon can take up precious real estate,
particularly if you can't move the thing sideways, as I believe was
reported here.
I had similar experience with an icon added by the software which came
with a Western Digital drive. Once I had battled my way past the
marketing speak, all it did was report the percentage of used space on
the drive. Now zapped by removing the software.

I have this same icon and software on my Macs. I posted here how to get
rid of it. No comment reported from the OP regarding that. If you want
to talk about menu real estate, I have iStatP Pro installed in the menu.
It takes up CONSIDERABLE space but on a 17" MBP, there's still plenty of
space in the menu.
Spotlight, battery, Airport, Bluetooth, Sierra Wireless EVDO, Volume,
Time Machine, Spaces, Keyboard Viewer, time (24hr with seconds), Date
(day of week), iStat (which takes up as much real estate as all of the
aforementioned combined), IJCanon Scanner, WeatherDock (temp, forecast,
Location)... all this brings me up to the middle of the screen. THere's
plenty of open space to the right for the application menus.

Just one snag. I don't have a 17" screen. I'm running a bit of a kludge
here as well with a 15" external monitor. Yes I need to go shopping but
other things keep coming to the top of the list.:-(

I have a 13" MacBook with Spotlight, clock (hour and seconds), volume,
airport, Bluetooth, Time Machine, iStat, Canon utility and I've still
got plenty of space. But, to each their own.....
