How does one get the (empty) CD tray to eject when using a G5 with a
non-mac keyboard?
Since this G5 doesn't have a Cd eject button on its face, I tried all
the function keys... Cmd-E... to no avail. (i did discover a lot of
neato Expose shortcuts from the function keys, though.)
I solved the CD problem for now by hooking up the Apple keyboard and
pressing the CD eject key on it... so now i got my first CD is in the
G5, and I could keep it there for the ability to select it and press
Cmd-E at any later time...
.... but there ought to be a better way to deal with this.

I bought a non-Apple (but Mac compatible keyboard) and my system
automatically assigns F12 to be the Eject button. But you have to press
and HOLD it for >2 seconds to get the tray to open/close. Try it.

Did you try holding down F12? That works on mine. Don't just press it
and release... this invokes dashboard. Hold it down for a second or two.

One option is to control-click on the CD icon in the sidebar of the Finder
window and then select "Eject" from the resulting contextual menu.

Michael-
I tried it on my Beige G3 Minitower running 10.2.8. F12 works for me too!

I dont get a CD icon in the sidebar unless there already is a CD inside
the tray.

I thought F12 worked - if you hold it down for a few seconds.

Go to the /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/ folder and
double-click Eject.menu.

You can use a menu-item:
Navigate to and double click on:
/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu\ Extras/Eject.menu
Then you get a small eject-icon on the right side of the menu bar. If you
have more then one drive, you can choose which drive to open from the menu
of this icon.
kind regards, Herlind

And you were right! Holding F12 worked. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

My goof! I misinterpreted the "(empty)" in your posting. I guess I've gotten
so used to the slot loading CD/DVD that I forgot that there are also tray
loaders.

It does...
And Scroll Lock brings up the shutdown menu.
