So, can't say I've tried sharing with Windows computers a lot, but
this seems like either a cache problem or a Leopard problem.
I turned on windows sharing on my Macbook Pro, and went to the network
view on my Windows Vista Ultimate computer. It searched for a while
and then showed my laptop. I double-clicked it and provided the login
(which was my name, not my login name by the way).
After that I see two items: "sandman's public folder" and "Printers".
Oh, ok.. so when logged in I don't have the same kind of access as
when I log in via AFP, where I can mount the entire hard drive? Well,
that's ok, I thought. Leopard has new sharing abilities!
So I went to the folder I was interested in, "Get Info", check "Shared
Folder". The folder in question get the "Shared Folder" banner in the
window so the sharing seems to be adequately performed. In the Sharing
preference pane in System Preferences, the folder is list alongside
the "Sandman's Public Folder".
In Vista, I right click in the window and pick refresh. It blanks the
window and refreshes it but shows the same two items. Hm.
On the Mac, I turn file sharing off, and my computer is removed from
the network view in Vista, I then turn it on and it is again shown,
but when mounting/entering it, the same two items are shown, but not
the folder I shared. How come?
I reboot Vista to no avail, the folder just doesn't show up. Anyone
knows what might cause this problem?

No hits here, but I could have told you that. Why didn't you simply
crosspost? If you don't know how, we can explain it. I'll do it now.

======
yes, it is a problem with network authentication between Vista and OSX.
Vista supports (out-of-the-box) V2 (as I recall) and OSX supports only
V1.
There is aregistry change that will allow it to work.... I use it here
and it works fine.
let me see if I have it saved somewhere......

======
found it:
The issue is that the older network hard drives do not use the same
authentication protocol that
Vista uses by default. The solution is to modify the security settings
in Vista (using secpol.msc or
editing the registry) to change the policy from "NTLMv2 Only" to "LM
and NTLM - use NTLMv2 if
negotiated". The precise instructions follow, and will also work to
enabled file sharing between
Vista and Max OS X, according to the LockerGhome post.
In order to share files with Mac OS X with Windows File Sharing enabled,
you will need to change the following policy in Windows Vista:
Start>Run>secpol.msc [enter]
Click on "Local Policies" --> "Security Options"
Navigate to the policy "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication
level" and double-click it to get its Properties. By default Windows
Vista sets the policy to "NTVLM2 responses only". Use the drop-down
arrow to change this to "LM and NTLM - use NTLMV2 session security if
negotiated".
In Vista Home Premium, you won't have this tool so per Steve Winograd, do:
1. Run the registry editor and open this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
1. If it doesn't already exist, create a DWORD value named
LmCompatibilityLevel
3. Set the value to 1
4. Reboot

This didn't help at all. The folder on my Mac did not show up on my
Vista box after the above changes, unfortunately.

Post a public apology for your recent lies about me and your attempts to tie
your posts to my name and I shall offer assistance.
Other than that you can rot. Good day. :)

Wow, you are really reducing Windows security by setting these low
like this. This is NT 4, Windows 95 era type settings. I am
disappointed OS X hasn't moved up to Kerberos authentication that
Windows introduced with Windows 2000.

Why would I want your assistance?
When will you offer a public apology for all your lies about me, by
the way?

As with you, if he can list something I have said about him that is not true
I would, of course, apologize. This does not mean I am looking for every
nit from you and he.
Neither you nor he, of course, will act in a similar way: you will *never*,
for example, apologize for your outrageous behavior toward me - even after
your ISP made you stop some of it.

You asked for help from people in CSMA... and I am in CSMA. You asked for
my help.
And you *took* a lot of my advice on your website, so you can stop your
lying about not looking or me for help. You are simply lying.

I am in CSMA... thus you also asked me.
And you snipped dishonestly again.

Nopes. I would never ask you for any technical, or theoretical, help.

I think you misspelt "the Kerberos authentication that Microsoft

The person on the other side was a young woman. Very obviously a young woman.
There was no possible way that she could have been mistaken for a young
man in any language, especially Braille.

Exactly. Not only am I in the group of people who he knows sees his posts,
he knows I have helped him in the past (such as with his website).

Sandman is now pretending he did not ask a group of people he *knew* I was a
member of for help. He is also pretending I have not already helped him
with his website, which is an outright lie from him. From a past post:
-----
* Sandman belittled by web skills
* I looked at his www.sandman.net site and found it to be pretty darn bad
* your HTML does not come close to validating correctly, you repeatedly
exclude alt tags, start tags but leave out the end declaration, have
end declarations for tags you did not use, use tags in contexts where
they are not allowed (such as TD tags outside of tables), use properties
that do not exist (such as "align='no'), etc.
* your CSS does not validate correctly
* your design makes poor use of contrast and moderate use of whitespace
* your images are poorly compressed - often up to 10x as large as they
need be
* the page is not designed with the idea of printing in mind
* Sandman made all sorts of excuses for his poor code
* Sandman's CSS changed - and he denied ever changing it! It "magically"
started to validate where before it did not. This was proved with the
use of the Google cache. There is no reasonable doubt that Sandman was
lying.
* Sandman was not able to point to a single site of Snit's he thought was
done poorly. At some point he probably will, but the fact is that as
he was belittling me he could not point to any site *and* his own site
was nothing to brag about *and* he dishonestly altered in in order to
try to look better
-----
If you look at Sandman's homepage now you will see that he has continued to,
mostly, follow my suggestions.
* His HTML and CSS mostly validate now (he uses negative values for
padding in his CSS... an error that has no value as he uses it)
* His alt-text is much, much better - mostly empty for spacer images
(though he still does have some "Space" alt-text). Some of the rest
is debatable in its value for screen readers and search engines but
generally not a big deal. In the past he used "Space" no less than
30 times just on his home page.
* His art images are around 1-4K, not the close to 300K *each* they
used to be!
* He makes better use of white space and contrast (much of his text is
now black on white even)
* The page now looks good when printed
So for Sandman to claim he does not take my suggestions and apply them is an
outright lie on his part.
Of course he has not taken the advice and used it on all his pages. If you
look at the link he posted today,
http://csma.sandman.net/atlas/faq/index.php?faq=sigmond&id=81 you can see
that he still uses "space" as his alt tag at least four times. But even
there his CSS and HTML is much better than he used to be able to do.
Looking at just http://csma.sandman.net he uses alt-text of "space" five
times and then uses "left" and "right" to indicate where the spacer image is
in relation to an image! That is just absurd.

Sandman, Carroll, Mackay and Adams are just over the top these days. Let us
recall the views of mine that have thrown them over the edge:
* I noted Wally was incorrect about set theory. He was. I was right.
* I noted it is perverted for Tim Adams to claim sex must contain all
the features of sex. And I was right.
* I noted it is beyond anything that is even moderately acceptable for
Sandman, Carroll, Adams, and Mackay to try to take the CSMA debates out
of CSMA and effect my personal and business life. I was right.
* I noted it was wrong for Sandman to lie about my posting with my
wife's name and for him to harass her with email. I was right.
* I have noted how Sandman uses an absurd claim of proof-by-quote-
scavenging to try to support his attacks and lies, which which
he does... and based on that (in part) he is completely cowed
by the others I have listed. They "co-troll" and support each
others lies... but repeatedly fail to offer support based on
any real evidence. And I was right.
* Carroll claims that the trolling of he and his co-trolls is my fault
for even responding to their lies. He is delusional.
In other words I have been right... and none of the four of them can deal
with it.

I am pretty much done with these guys for a while anyway... the conversation
is about nothing other than them and their lies. If anyone cares, here are
the topics... and then, at least for a while, this is my last word on it
(unless others have questions):
* I noted Wally was incorrect about set theory. He was. I was right.
* I noted it is perverted for Tim Adams to claim sex must contain all
the features of incest (and that the two are "identical"). And I
was right. Tim claims I am lying even though the Google record
proves me right... and I have asked him to clarify his comments if
he stated things incorrectly.
* Mackay, Sandman, and Carroll have all claimed that I, by pointing to
a post from 2004(!) somehow am as bad as they are ... and yet the post
in question has me pointing to the company of the IP address of the
post and "quoting" the headers of a fake email I make clear is *fake*.
That's right: they claim that doing that once in 2004 is as bad as
getting multiple people to repeatedly (obsessively?) lie about me
and try to associate that with my business which has nothing to do
with my Usenet posts! Oh, and my post was in response to Mackay lying
about an email where he faked headers of "mine".
In other words I have been right... and none of the four of them can deal
with it. They will lie and lie and lie and lie and lie... there is no point
in my refuting their lies again and again and again - it is not as if it is
like I can do it ONE MORE TIME... and then they will own up to their
trolling and lying.
As I said, if others want details I am happy to provide them... but I have
provided the proof of what I have said above to the four of them
repeatedly... giving it to them one. more. time. will not please them at
all.
Sorry to re-add csms but I wanted to make it clear this was done.

Since you've claimed that a reply to one person's post isn't a reply,
how can you now claim that a general request for help is a request for
help from one person?

You made a request to two *groups* of people... of which you knew I was a
member of one of those groups. And, of course, since I have helped you more
than anyone else you can name there is *no* reason to think you excluded me!
