Mac OS X 10.4.10 and Cisco VPN client 4.9.01 - problems

Having updated to Mac OS X 10.4.10 (via software update first, later via
combo update), I found the connections with Cisco's VPN client 4.9.01
(0030) - the latest at our university - to be more than flaky.
For no apparent reason the connection seems not to work, with a
notification that I have no working internet interface. I have not been
able to reproduce the error nor the connection reliably. I have also
reinstalled the Cisco VPN client.

It seems 10.4.10 and Cisco's client do not like each other. In doubt,
I'll blame Cisco because the client has been less than reliable for the
last year.

Has anyone been able to track the error, or even knows how to cure it?
Or can at least confirm the trouble?

TIA

Marc

I'm using Cisco VPN client 4.9.00 here under MacOS X 10.4.10 on a
Core2Duo iMac.

No problems since the MacOS X upgrade, haven't had any notable problems
with the Cisco client before or after (and none, IIRC, since 4.5 or so.

Probably not very helpful...

I just got a new client through my university. Up to now it seems to
work.

-darwin-4.9.01.0080-universal-k9.dmg - not sure everyone can download.)

(nicer user interface for the client at

I can't connect either, complains about not being able to talk to
the .kext, kext is loaded though.
This is with 4.9.00 (0050) on a 2.3 MBP

You need a newer client: 4.9.01 (0080).

I got it through my university:
https://www.uzh.ch/id/cl/dl/sicher/vpn/ssl-dir/software/MacOSX/vpnclient-
darwin-4.9.01.0080-universal-k9.dmg

Seems to work up to now.

Thanks!

I dug up the 4.9.01.0080 version (thanks google and foreign
universities w/o much security on their client:) and now I'm getting
intermittent success- works about 50% of the time, other times it
complains that there is no interface available (and, like the .00
version, logs say the kext isn't loaded)

So, a litttttle bit closer. Still trying to diagnose under what
circumstances it loads vs when it doesn't. If anyone knows the voodoo
I'd love to hear it.

I have seen this happen when the computer has been slept and woken
multiple times. At some point this interface breaks. So, I make a
Automator action to restart it, otherwise you have to reboot.

This is the Applescript code I put in the automator:

on run {input, parameters}

	do shell script "/System/Library/StartupItems/CiscoVPN/CiscoVPN
restart" with administrator privileges

	return input
end run

Marc,

Thanks a lot for both links! I was about to write a little tool like
Shimo - but turns out somebody's already done it and they did a great
job if it. It's what CiscoVPN _should_ have been ;)

Are Mac OS X 10.5.8's iLife programs safe to use in Mac OS X 10.7.x and 10.8.x?
Hi. Someone told me that Mac OS X 10.7.x and 10.8.x do not come with iLife like the older Mac OS X versions (e.g., 10.5.x). I did not know this! Since my client uses iPhoto that came preinstalled on his old 2008 MacBook Pro's Mac OS X 10.5.x (10.5.8 right now), can he use the old one from 10.5.8? Or will he need a third party replacement (needs to import/copy the old image files) or buy a new iPhoto version for his photo(graph)s? I recalled he did not like iPhoto and wonder if the new one is any better. Thank you in advance. :) -- Quote of the Week: "Every ruler...
