I tried it for an account I just use for surfing www and Usenet. Seems
to work fine.
What do you think? Good idea, pros and cons?

Ignoring the fact that following his directions may result in insecure
permissions on the copied home folder and its contents, if the hard
drive holding those files isn't available 100% of the time while the OS
is running, bad things can happen. Unless you are prepared to ensure the
hard drive holding those files will never, ever be unavailable, or
unless you are prepared to deal with the potential consequences if and
when it does become unavailable, I wouldn't recommend it, personally.

I think that nothing succeeds like success. If it has been working to
your satisfaction for some time, it would seem that there are no cons.
If you did this hours ago you will simply have to wait and see if some
esoteric glitch pops up later.

No problems. I did move it to a 500 GB partition, because there's more
space there then on my internal hard drive (80 GB). Just an experiment.
If it goes wrong, nothing's lost.

so no reason to move it.

why not put the space consuming files on the other partition,
particularly music and videos. itunes doesn't care where that stuff is.
no need to move the entire home folder. in fact, almost nothing has to
be in your home folder, other than what's in the library hierarchy.

Did that. More than 40 GB of music on one Firewire drive. iPhoto library
is not exactly small and is kept on another drive, including original
holiday pics, pics without EXIF info and compressed pics. Those alone
would fill up my boot drive quickly. I just don't like other stuff like
caches and and what have you to fill up the hard drive as well.

If you use directories within your home, you can move the directories to another
drive and use soft links from your home to other drive. You can leave log in
critical information like parts of ~/Library, ~/bin, etc on the root drive. If
the external drive becomes unavailable, at least your home won't lock up.

Aren't you the ex Israeli diplomat who was not going to read any
of my fouled languaged posts anymore and who accused me of not
knowing the subtleties of the politics over there? Or is it just
me who is losing it. <g>

For the most part, completely un-needed. There's really no reason to do it,
but also no reason not to do it,

No, I'm the retired American diplomat who served in Israel. And you
still don't know the subtleties--and not so subtle stuff--about the
Muddle East. Bedouin farmers? That's an oxymoron. Bedouin nomadic
herdsmen is the phrase you were looking for--even if they do sometimes
carry their camels about in pickup trucks.
As for the kill-file, with seven Macs in the house, one can't always
keep track of who's killed where. <g>
