Panther is coming to my house!

Christmas present.

I'll be upgrading from 10.1.5

Any 'gotchas' that aren't clear in the provided
paperwork? i.e., extra steps I should take to
avoid losing anything important?

There were some useful hints in the tidbits taking control e-book about
upgrading to Panther. It's a $5 download. (No affiliation; just a
satisfied customer).

I had a few non-standard Preference Panes that didn't work at all with
Panther, and I had to reinstall Palm Desktop (still have to do this on
my work computer...), but all this is in the annoyance, not catastrophe
category.

If you're running Default Folder X, be sure to upgrade to version 1.9.x
_before_ upgrading to Panther.

One more question: I like the bluish
color scheme of 10.1 and I _don't_
like the "fur" theme of Jaguar.
Don't know whether any "aesthetics"
of Panther will bug me, but in case there
is, is there a way to minimize the changes
in appearance without giving up new functionality?

(Also, I don't want to confuse the wife and kids
with unnecessary changes.)

Is there a firmware update needed?

I preferred the semi-transparent title bar in 10.2, that's gone in 10.3.
Instead you get solid metal. But I have it turned off with an Ape module, a
Haxie. I think there are other ways to disable the metal, but the
transparent bar is gone for good.

Ouch, I hope not. I presume the installer will tell me.

Hmmm, mixed feelings. There were times when
seeing through it was convenient, other times
when it was mildly irritating. Still, it would
be nice for the family's sake to minimize changes
in appearance that have no _functional_ benefit.

After succeeding in killing 10.1.5, and not wanting to reinstall from
10.0.3 (my existing CDs) and upgrading my way back to 10.1.5, I
decided that was the compelling reason I needed to upgrade to Panther.
I found that the installation was smooth and trouble free. I backed
up the important data I needed to be certain not to lose, but the
install lost not one thing.

I can't say that Panther is a stunning improvement that has changed
my life utterly, but it seems to work just fine. The Finder
interface is maybe a wee bit faster. Everything else seems about the
same. Nothing was broken by the install except my Aqua and X11
versions of Emacs built from CVS. Those wouldn't launch but were
easily replaceable.

I found the changes from 10.1.5 to 10.3 were pretty minimal. Buttons
look a little nicer. I neither particularly like nor hate the
brushed metal window look. The new Finder windows are markedly
different but I like them. Printing from the X11 side is vastly
improved.

What fur theme? Aside from the packaging, I mean.

I was told that the default background was Jaguar fur,
like the logo on the box. That's easy to change of course,
but other things might not be.

Like Tim, I neither love nor hate the brushed metal,
but I don't want to distract or confuse my A.D.D. family
with unnecessary change.

I know, they'll get used to it. :-)

Good news. Now it just occurred to me, how much bigger is 10.3
over 10.1.5? My teeny little disk is pretty full. (I had to
make /Developer an NFS mount because it wouldn't fit locally.)

When all you have is a perl, everything looks like a string.

Panther allows you to skip the additional junk in the 3rd disk. It means you
won't get the international package/languages and extra printer drivers.
Saves some 500 megabytes.
The basic 10.3 installation as about 2 GB without the 3rd disk.

I don't know how much bugger for sure, but System is 1.09 GB with
some of the XCode (Developer) tools installed (BSD tools, X11 tools,
headers, but not the Mac OS X tools sinc I'm only planning on
building some X11 apps- however, gcc 2.* is broken in Panther as far
as I can tell; gcc3 = 3.1 rather than 3.3 for some reason; I haven't
tried it yet).

Doesn't seem much bigger, but definitely much bugger. :-)

I did not like my disk partitioning, so I packed up
lots of stuff in backup files and stashed them over
on a FreeBSD Intel box.

Unfortunately, the two machines won't talk to each other
any more now that 10.3 is installed. If I can't fix it,
I'll have to burn the backup files onto CDs in order to
bring them back to the iMac! :-)

I suspect it has something to do with the firewall.
How is the 10.3 firewall actually implemented?

I put a lot of work into tweaking /etc/firewall.conf
on 10.1.5 and would rather not start over.

Same way as 10.3 You might try just turning the firewall off
altogether to see if that resolves it.

If you mean the same way as 10.1.5, not so.
Turning on and off the firewall, made no changes to /etc.
Nor, with it on OR off did a /etc/firewall.conf exist.

I finally just put all the same files in that I had
before in 10.1.5 (stuff in StartupItems, /etc/firewall.conf)
Now more things are working, but something's still not right.
