What happened to my 'w' key?

  • Follow

Pismo, OS 10.4.6. Starting yesterday, my 'w' key doesn't work (in terminal).
It just does nothing. If I preface it with <ESC>, it either works or works
the second time I hit it.

Suggestions?

Did you buy your computer second hand from the White House, just after
Bill Clinton left office?

Are you implying that that administration was computer savvy enough to use
Macs?

He was referencing a prank apparently carried out by White House
staffers in the Clinton administration as they were cleaning up before
leaving.

Gore is, and has for some time been, a Mac user.

I have a vague recollection of hearing that Clinton was a Windows user,
but I can't find anything right now to substantiate or deny that.

I have no idea what it means, but it's such a cool "word" (by which I mean
pronouncable sequence of letters) regardless.

I believe Bush is a Mac user.

I was indeed referring to a prank by the Clinton staff when they left.
All the 'w' keys on the White House computers were diabled, so that
nobody would be able to type 'George W Bush'.

Sorry you guys didn't get the joke. I had no intention of starting a
senseless discussion about who in the White House is or isn't using a
Mac. I couldn't care less about that.

This day and age there is no excuse for not having a minimal computer
literacy. Even my 80+ year old relatives use e-mail. /PaulN

I'd be very surprised if that's true for both of them.

What about lack of desire and need?

I know it's true for Clinton, at least during his presidency. It was in
his book, which I read. He claimed to have sent exactly 1 email, a
test.

Personally I don't know or really care if it's true (though I can
certainly believe it about the current officeholder).

> I know it's true for Clinton, at least during his presidency.

Well, that ended over five years ago, so things could have changed
since Jan 2001. And before that he was busy being President and also
no doubt had staff available for getting messages to people....

Martin

P.S. Not sure (nor do I care actually) what this has to do with the
'w' key.... (;-)

I started to wonder if these misunderstandings are being on purpose on
Mac scene?

Even as a turkish guy I got the joke and laughed here.

Same for IRC etc too, I started to give up channels because of "lack of
understanding" in scene.

It started to be like getting into some fpvragbybtl (rot13) newsgroup
and joke about Sci-Fi episodes of Uhooneq (rot13)

Here is the ultimate proof that it is not an image thing, he is really
a mac user:

http://www.lib.utexas.edu/taro/tslac/30084/30084-P.html

That is his inventioary and some undeniable Mac Books that all mac
users have are there.

BTW, I am not from Al Queda or something stalking your president :) I
just wondered this Mac story is some political image making or real.
So, simply searched web for "W. Bush" "Macintosh" some time ago.

"Sunburst Communications: Learner Profile, 1996
[2 folders; originally in 3-ring binder; Macintosh User's Guide was
originally sealed, opened by Texas State Archives staff]"

So, he didn't care to read Mac users guide just like us :)

About the political image thing? Well, if you know a politican (non
american) keeps buying Laptops to show "image" to voters that he is a
modern guy since 1995, you become a bit paranoid.

Gore is more than just a Mac user. He's on the Apple board of directors.

True, but in all seriousness that doesn't really imply anything. You'd
hope he'd at least be familiar with the product, but it doesn't
necessarily mean he'd use it given a choice.

I'd imagine an ex-VP gets enough offers to serve on various boards that
he has little incentive to accept them except in cases where he actually
cares about the company or the product.
