Dual boot - Windows 2000 server and Solaris

  • Follow

Anyone ever tried to do this?

At the moment, we use one laptop running windows 2000 svr as a ghost
server to rebuild our windows machines, and also a different laptop
runining solaris which acts as a jumpstart server to rebuild our unix
machines.

Planning to amalgamate these into a single dual boot laptop. Any
ideas / pointers / links?

IIRC the procedure I followed for XP was to defrag the filesystem and
disable the pagefile.
Then I booted Knoppix LiveCD and used QTParted to resize the NTFS
partition.

From here, you should be able to boot the OpenSolaris LiveCD and
install with the free disk space.

Load your OS of choice on the laptop. Install VirtualBox and run the
install servers as VMs.

It is also what I do. I have used both Virtual Box and VMWare with success
in booting and imaging. In fact, I don't even burn the DVDs any more, just
use the CD-ROM mounting of a file option. Routinely use the snapshots too
as I prep and patch the images for easy roll back or forking of the images.

And do this for Sparc and x86 using x86 as the boot server. My Sparc I boot
from x86 and have no issues so far. Been doing this since Solaris 7 or 8.
At some jobs I have even hooked up a 1000BT cross over and it installs in no
time. I do the cross over as many environments have the brain damaged DHCP
setup/helper on the routers to a Windoze server which does not play well.

I even use the VM for installing over the net to hone down the install
scripts for x86 to x86 boot.... works well as CD/DVD ROM devices are slow
compared to a nework boot that can also be scripted.

Once you have the boot scripts down, you can't get them out of the box and
in the racks fast enough to keep up.

Works too with flash installs even into a VM.
