raq550 will not shutdown - but reboots instead
raq550
Linux version 2.6.18-53.el5.sb (root@cbox.osoffice.co.uk) (gcc version
3.4.6 20060404 (Red Hat 3.4.6-9)) #1 SMP Sat Aug 16 18:46:51 BST 2008
I've tried several methods of shutting this raq down but nothing works, it
reboots instead of shutting down.
1) web interface - shutdown - ends in a reboot
2) in telnet I logged in as root and did : [root@localhost ~]# shutdown -h
now ...it does a reboot.
3) I also tried doing the front panel buttons, chose power down and it does
a reboot.
I logged in as root and did yum update and it installed 9 packages and 31
updates but still the server reboots.
thanks for any help.

Is it possible that your console PROM has "AUTOBOOT? = TRUE"?

thanks for your response richard, what you say makes sense but as an
absolute beginner to cobalt's I'm struggling a bit.
I found a few pages on google about this and I did a telnet into the raq
but the eeprom command.doesn't do anything.
[admin@localhost ~] # eeprom <returnkey> should list the eeprom contents
but all mine does is drop to the next line.
[admin@localhost ~] # eeprom "auto-boot?"=false <returnkey> just drops a
line and appears to have no effect on this problem - the machine just keeps
rebooting when it should be shutting down.
[admin@localhost ~] #/usr/sbin/eeprom auto-boot? false <returnkey> also
just drops to the next line.
[admin@localhost ~] /usr/sbin/eeprom auto-boot? false <returnkey> gives 'no
such file or directory'.
[admin@localhost ~] eeprom <returnkey> gives 'comand not found'.
I've done all the above commands both as admin and as root but no joy.
thanks if you have any further ideas.

I was assuming that an raq550 was SPARC architecture! Sorry about that!
Since it's not, cancel everything I said and ask someone who knows
about "Cobalts"!

We used to use them but to what the OP problem is, who knows.
The cobalts ran a modified os, linux based, but was customized to the
chassis. It sounded like he's using whatever flavor-of-the-month linux on
there, so maybe shutdown is never going to work.
It's like the guys installing linux on a Sun e450, wondering why the fans
run at full speed all the time.
The other problem with cobalts is, they are so old now (at least 10 years),
it's possible there is that cap problem in the power supply being so many
had them (bad caps).
