Ultra 2 ultra scsi card questions

  • Follow

I picked up an Ultra 2 and wanted to hook this to a 711 Multipack
UltraSCSI disk pack. Got an UltraScsi card which I inserted, but I
can't see the disks.

probe-scsi-all shows:

/sbus@1f,0/QLGC,isp@0,10000

/sbus@1f,0/SUNW,fas@e,8800000
(internal stuff seen here)

Looks like there are four slots to install the card in, I have it in
the bottom-left slot (seen looking at the back, just above the keyboard
jack.) Card has "ULTRA SCSI DIFFERENTIAL" engraved on back panel. Part
X1065A 3702443

"boot -r", drvconfig, disks weren't of any use when booted in helping
to see the drives.

Also hooked a tape drive to the card and couldn't see that either.

Openboot 3.11, if that matters.

Is there a driver I'm supposed to get for this? I'm pretty certain I
have the proper cable, so I don't think that is an issue.

When I hook the box to the onboard scsi device I can see the external
drives, but would like to use the UltraSCSI card if possible.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Jeff

If the OBP can't display the disks, something is wrong with the
hardware--cable or the multipack itself. There's no driver required to
"see" the disks at that level. If you don't see them, something's not
working at a very low level.

cable--bent pin or something else. Try another cable.
bad disk(s) in the multipack--does it work connected to another machine?
what if you reseat the disks?

Or the UltraSCSI card isn't the right kind for your Multipack. I get
confused on which SUN devices require a HVD, LVD, or SE connection. I
do recall the Multipacks will work connected directly to the built-in SE
SCSI adapters on the older systems (SS20 and Sparc5).

http://docs-pdf.sun.com/805-3954-10/805-3954-10.pdf
doesn't say if what type of SCSI it requires.

SCSI and (High Voltage)DIFFERENTIAL SCSI are not the same.
The card you've listed is a High Voltage DIFFERENTIAL.

Connecting a standard/narrow/wide/LVD SCSI device to a high voltage
differential control can damage the device and/or the SCSI controller.

Most SCSI devices are either standard SCSI or LVD's (Low Voltage
Differential). They will work with most, if not all, standard SCSI
controlers (Narrow, wide, etc) or LVD controllers.

Without details on the disks/tape drive you want to connect
to this system, I'd guess they won't work with this controller.

Thanks for the comments, seems I need to brush up on my SCSI knowledge.
The drives I have in the multipack are Seagate cheetahs,39103LC, 9gb.
As

Since I can access the drives from the system scsi I can work through
that for now. And as this is just a home box to play with it isn't a
big deal. I'll have to investigate the card issue further and then
perhaps see what is floating around on ebay.

Thanks,
Jeff

Probably not a half bad idea to upgrade the firmware even though that's not
the problem.

I believe 3.11 is the bare minimum for doing 64-bit on the Ultra 2.
The latest firmware is 3.25 and is in patch 104169-08.
